Summary

Join our in-house vehicle maintenance team looking after a fleet of more than 50 Ambulances. You will be given the opportunity to work on a variety of vehicles and ambulance equipment to keep the fleet moving, including our new range of electric ambulances.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Duties will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Vehicle inspections ahead of council testing requirements
  • Supporting the weekly vehicle checks and identifying any urgent issues to be fixed
  • Working with our crew members to understand issues and provide replacement vehicles if needed, including supporting breakdowns while on shift
  • Fault finding and diagnosing of fixes on a range of issues and equipment
  • Servicing and replacement of key consumables on the vehicle
  • Ordering parts from our suppliers, balancing cost and quality of components used
  • Supporting the vehicle conversion program to develop new Ambulances onto the fleet

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
  • Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
  • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Training schedule

  • The Apprentice will work towards their Apprenticeship Standard in Motor Vehicle service and Maintenance Technician Level 3 
  • The successful candidate will be assigned a dedicated assessor who will provide support and guidance throughout the course
  • This is a Day Release programme which means you will attend Newark College, term time only
  • This will fall within your contracted working hours

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

English and Maths (grade A*/9 – C/4)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

There is no weekend or evening work involved in the role. Occasionally, you may need to support in the recovery of a vehicle if a breakdown occurs while on shift.
