Summary

Here at Peta Ltd, we are looking to source an exceptional Mechanical Engineering Fitter Apprentice for our client, Precision Products (Portsmouth) Ltd. This role involves learning how to use technical information to build mechanical assemblies and systems. You will also be completing tests to ensure specifications are met.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Joining the PPP team as a Mechanical Engineering Fitter Apprentice, your role will be focused on undertaking the manufacturing processes on-site. As part of your programme, you will learn how to:

  • Plan work activities, including sourcing components, equipment and tooling
  • Interpret technical information
  • Prepare the work area for the assembly task
  • Assemble components to produce equipment, machines and systems
  • Produce complex high-value, low-volume assemblies
  • How to produce and/or re-furbish components
  • Check your work against quality standards and make any required adjustments
  • Hand over products and prepare the work area for the next task
  • With experience, you will also be able to identify and resolve problems

What you'll learn

  • Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
  • Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
  • Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
  • Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
  • Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
  • Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
  • Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
  • Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
  • Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
  • Reporting work outcomes or issues.
  • Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
  • Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
  • Operating within limits of responsibility.
  • Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Training schedule

As a Mechanical Engineering Fitter Apprentice, you will be studying a Level 3 Engineering Fitter Apprenticeship. Throughout your apprenticeship with Precision Products (Portsmouth) Ltd, you will be supported by your company mentor and your PETA Learning and Development Coach.

Your Level 3 programme will include a Level 3 Engineering work-based qualification delivered by PETA, and day release for 24 months to complete a Level 3 BTEC technical certificate. 

Overall duration 45 months.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade C/4)
  • Maths (grade C/4)
