Summary
The Design Services Team are looking to recruit an Apprentice who is committed and motivated to support the team in the design, preparation of contract documentation and supervision of a range of highway and infrastructure related works. This role combines technical training with members of the team and hands on experience.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Your duties will include;

Assist, as required, with a wide range of engineering duties including in the preparation of engineering drawings, specifications, and reports.

Develop an understanding of the design manuals, technical guides and conditions of contract associated with the delivery of schemes.

With support and training, use CAD and other engineering software to produce technical drawings and other works information.

Contribute to site surveys, measurements, and setting out tasks.

Maintain accurate records of meetings and site visits as required.

Assist with the investigation of queries and complaints relating to schemes delivered within Transport Planning.

Assist in the supervision of the delivery of works including contractors, suppliers, and other appropriate agencies both internal and external.

Assist in the preparation of information for consultation and engagement.

Assist in monitoring the expenditure and budgets of small design schemes.

Assist in ensuring that checklist and process documents are accurate and followed.

Attend engagement activities, reviews of potential schemes, site visits, contractor meetings, and on-site commissioning activities.

Assist in the production of Ward Member updates, planning submissions, scheme update material and strategy documents.

Develop and understanding of the Highways Development Control process and assist the team in assessing Planning applications and maintaining highways records.

Gain an understanding of transport’s role in the support of regeneration and housing through the collation of information necessary to develop strategies and schemes.

What you'll learn

- Apply appropriate civil engineering principles, techniques, and methods, including mathematical, scientific, and technical know-how, to civil engineering and the construction process
- Apply key principles, techniques and methods of data and technical information collection, analysis, and evaluation to support the delivery of civil engineering models, designs, and technical solutions
- Operate appropriate software packages for data gathering and analysis, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) or Building Information Modelling (BIM), to create technical drawings, models and designs using relevant conventions and engineering terminology
- Apply statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures, and regulations in the civil engineering environment, using risk management processes, procedures, and documentation
- Support and contribute to the production or modification of civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and procedures and codes of practice
- Apply environmental policies and sustainable principles in civil engineering projects, recognising the need to reduce carbon use, lower emissions and plan for wider sustainability
- Plan, carry out and manage own work in line with quality assurance, recognising the wider implications to customer needs, and within cost and resource limitations
- Consider equality, diversity and inclusion in the delivery of civil engineering projects
- Apply document control processes and procedures using the approved processes, maintaining quality compliance when creating or amending engineering documentation
- Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, and incorporate relevant and appropriate terms, standards, and data
- Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
- Plan, undertake and review their own professional competence, regularly updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance

- Qualification - Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship.
- The Apprentice will attend college 1 day a week.

Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English or equivalent (grade (5-9)(C-A*))
- Mathematics (grade (5-9)(C-A*))
