What you'll do at work
Play & Youth Apprentice
As a Play & Youth Apprentice, you will be an essential part of our team, helping to plan and deliver engaging sessions for children and young people across the city. These sessions cater to different age groups, including:
- Play sessions (ages 5-11)
- Youth sessions (ages 12-19)
- Targeted youth sessions (e.g., gender-specific groups such as girls' and lads' groups)
Your role is to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where children and young people feel valued, heard, and supported. You will be a friendly and positive presence, ensuring that every session is fun, enriching, and engaging.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the planning and delivery of diverse group activities that encourage learning, creativity, and social development
- Support off-site activities and trips, ensuring safety and engagement for all participants
- Encourage children and young people to play, learn, and grow, fostering their confidence and well-being
- Assist in the management of project resources, ensuring materials and equipment are well-maintained and available
- Promote community engagement, encouraging local involvement to enrich the experiences of children and young people
- Ensure all activities comply with relevant safeguarding policies, procedures, and regulations
- Help organise special events and projects that bring excitement and learning opportunities to children and young people across the city
- Maintain a safe, healthy, and supportive environment by following INSPIRE YOUTH's policies and procedures
What your apprenticeship includes:
- A mixture of face-to-face and online catch-ups every 4 - 6 weeks to discuss feedback and progress
- A mixture of on and off-the-job training, including workshops and webinars
- Reviews every 12 weeks with your Line Manager and apprenticeship Trainer
- The chance to get Functional Skills in English and maths (if you don’t already have GCS
- We particularly welcome applicants from female, black, minority, ethnic (BME) communities, disabled people and homosexual, bisexual and trans (LGBT) communities, as they are currently underrepresented within our industry.
You will work towards your Community Activator Coach Level 2 qualification over the course of 12-18 months

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Planning and adapting sessions and activities that respond to customer feedback and encourage customers to develop a lifelong activity habit.
- Coaching or leading pre-planned sport or physical activity sessions that are attractive to the target audience(s) and develop motivational relationships with customers.
- Promoting a physical activity offer, (including but not exclusively) organised play and sport in the community which supports individuals on their behaviour change journey.
- Working collaboratively with sports clubs and other community assets – including volunteers, public services, youth workers, the police and community champions.
- Supporting customers to co-produce rewarding volunteering opportunities.
- Supporting families to participate together in sport and physical activity.
- Working effectively with customer insight to overcome individual, community and societal barriers to participation in physical activity and sport.
- Contributing to the employer’s design of activities and services and practising the employer’s organisation’s values, policies and procedures.
- Contributing to teams that deliver community events and festivals.
- Supporting organisations to evaluate, develop and promote sessions and other opportunities such as outdoor group exercise and informal social play.
- Maintaining personal safety and wellbeing, as well as that of customers.
- Managing disruptive behaviours from individuals within the group setting.
- Encouraging customers to be regularly active – both formally and informally – within sports clubs or leisure facilities including open-space.
- Effectively using social media and technology, appropriately, to deliver targeted messages to identified customer groups for example children, teenagers, adults and older adults.
- Effectively monitor and evaluate activities, sessions and projects using technology platforms to maintain accurate records and produce timely reports.

Other requirements
Outdoor Working – Some sessions take place outdoors in all weather conditions, so you must be prepared to work in rain, wind, and sunshine. Travel Required – You will need to travel between venues across the city, sometimes carrying equipment. Physical Activity – This is an active role that involves setting up activities, supervising games, and engaging with children and young people on their level. Flexible Hours – Some evening, weekend, and school holiday work is required to meet the needs of young people.
