Summary

Based at The Grange School, Runcorn, the Classroom Support Assistant will work in the Nursey and help teachers by supporting children’s learning and development. The role involves a range of responsibilities including assisting with daily routines, facilitating play-based learning activities and ensuring a safe and nurturing environment.

£12,955.80 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Support for the student:

  • Supervise and provide particular support for students, including those with special needs, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities
  • Deal with personal care and comfort of pupils as required in relation to welfare, health, hygiene, toileting, dressing, feeding, mobility and the administering of medicines
  • Establish good working relationships with pupils acting as a role model
  • Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher
  • Promote inclusion and acceptance of all students, self-esteem and independence
  • Provide feedback to students in relation to progress and achievement under the guidance and direction of the teacher
  • Support the use of specialist equipment and procedures including, moving and handling to meet a child’s individual needs
  • Respond to pupils' minor medical problems administering basic first aid where appropriately trained

Support for the teacher:

  • Create and maintain a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment, in accordance with lesson planning and preparation
  • In liaison with the teacher, utilise strategies to support students in achieving learning goals
  • Assist with the display of students work
  • Provide detailed and regular feedback to teachers on students’ achievements and progress in an agreed format
  • Promote good student behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents and encouraging students to take responsibility for their own behaviour in line with established school policy
  • Provide clerical/ administrative support (e.g., photocopying, word processing, filing, collecting money etc.)
  • Undertake student record keeping as requested
  • To contribute to the review of students needs

Support for the school:

  • To be aware of and comply with school policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
  • Contribute to the school ethos, aims and development/improvement plan

  • Support babies and young children through a range of transitions.e.g moving onto school, moving house or the birth of a sibling
  • Recognise when a child is in danger, at risk of serious harm or abuse and explain the procedures to be followed to protect them. Types of abuse including: domestic, neglect , physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
  • Identify risks and hazards in the work setting and during off site visits.relating to both children and staff
  • Demonstrate skills and understanding for the prevention and control of infection, including hand washing, food preparation and hygiene, dealing with spillages safely, safe disposal of waste, using correct personal protective equipment.
  • Use equipment, furniture and materials safely, following the manufacturers’ instructions and setting’s requirements.
  • Encourage children to be aware of personal safety and the safety of others and develop personal hygiene practices (including oral hygiene).
  • Promote health and wellbeing in settings by encouraging babies and young children to consume healthy and balanced meals, snacks and drinks appropriate for their age and be physically active through planned and spontaneous activity throughout the day, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Carry out respectful care routines appropriate to the development, stage, dignity and needs of the child, including eating (feeding and weaning/complimentary feeding), nappy changing procedures, potty/toilet training, care of skin, teeth and hair and rest and sleep provision.
  • Communicate with all children in ways that will be understood, including verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Extend children’s development and learning through verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Encourage babies and young children to use a range of communication methods.
  • Use a range of communication methods to exchange information with children and adults.

Training schedule

Early Years Practitioner Level 2.

You will be required to attend training for a full day, one day per month at Riverside College (WA8 7QQ). 

More training information

You will also receive first aid and safeguarding children training. 

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 3 or above)
  • Mathematics (grade 3 or above)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
