Summary

As an apprentice you will be part of a supportive & skilled team who have themselves previously been through the apprenticeship journey. Learning a wide range of practical skills, including tree planting, pruning, aerial climbing, and the safe use of machinery such as chainsaw and chippers.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Arboriculture is a growing industry with strong environmental importance & you will gain valuable experience in maintaining the health & safety of trees in parks, woodlands, roadside & private properties.

You will be given full training, safety equipment & guidance from experienced arborists who are passionate about what they do.

Working as a part of our domestic & commercial teams, delivering tree services in the Lincolnshire/Nottinghamshire areas.

The apprentice will gain hands-on experience & their main roles will be:

  • Keeping the work areas safe & tidy
  • Supporting & assisting the other team members in their tasks
  • Preparing and managing tools on the ground

As the apprenticeship progresses, the roles will change to suit the level of competence achieved.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Recognise health and safety needs onsite and work safely
  • Complete site-specific risk assessments and emergency action plans
  • Select appropriate equipment for tree work operations
  • Set out workplace signage (highway & non highway) and assists with traffic control
  • Process tree work arisings using appropriate machinery
  • Maintain and take appropriate care of tools, equipment and other onsite factors (such as customer or public buildings etc.)
  • Recognise a variety of tree species using common names
  • Carry out a range of formative pruning operations
  • Carry out branch removal up to 200mm diameter with hand tools (target pruning for final cut).
  • Fell and process small trees up to 380mm diameter.
  • Support aerial tree workers with transfer of equipment for aerial tree work operations
  • Perform an aerial rescue of colleague from a rope and harness
  • Work safely at height in the tree under supervision
  • Communicate technical information about arboricultural operations to fellow team members, clients and other stakeholders as required.

Your training plan

Arborist Level 2.

Off the job training will take place at Riseholme College on a day release basis during term time.

Desirable qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 3)
  • Maths (grade 3)

● A CRB check will be undertaken if you are successful for this role ● The vacancy is based in a rural area and public transport links are minimal. You will need to ensure that you can access the employer and training provider in line with the hours of work ● If you are short listed for this vacancy you may need to attend more than one interview ● The role will involve working outdoors/in all weathers/standing for long periods/chemicals/heat/cold/heights/underground/ driving/using heavy equipment/lifting etc.

About this company

Crimson Kings was created by 2 experienced Arborists who previously were employed by other local companies. They have been going since 2019, and became a Limited company 2 years later. Since then, Crimson Kings has invested in trucks & machinery to be able to run 2 to 3 teams daily. They also have their own MEWP to be able to safely provide tree services. It has been employing apprentices for the last 4 years, successfully retaining 83.33% which is a strong figure, reflecting well on our training and working environment.
