Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Working individually and as part of a team (with mentor support)
- Keeping the workshop tidy, ensuring all materials are in the right place for the operator
- Looking after goods in/out and also ensuring the machines and equipment used are maintained and cleaned
- Prepare materials for the operators, ready for the engineering process, which would lead in time to you yourself being trained on the CNC mills and lathes and eventually programming the machines
- Comply with regulations and organisation safety requirements including any environmental compliance procedures and systems
- Identify hazards and hazardous situations
- Prepare the work area and equipment
- Obtain and follow the appropriate job documentation and work instructions
- Extract the necessary data and information from specifications and related documentation
- Carryout the engineering activities in line with their job role
- Carry quality checks as required
You will learn how to obtain the necessary job instructions, engineering drawings and specifications and how to interpret them and be flexible to the company’s requirements. Learn how to deal appropriately with any problems that may occur within the manufacturing environment and deal with them accordingly. Carry out quality checks during and after manufacturing.
You will also be trained on the different materials & tooling used for different processes and how to plan for a job, preparing your materials and equipment beforehand before carrying out the job.

Your training plan
The apprentice will be enrolled in the Level 2 Engineering Operative (mechanical) standard. This will be delivered on day release at Castleford College.
The apprentice will work towards the achievement of:
- Diploma in engineering operations (skills)
- Certificate or Diploma in engineering operations (knowledge)
- Apprentices without Level 1 (or equivalent) in English and maths must ensure that apprentices achieve Level 1 and take the test for Level 2 prior to taking the end-point assessment. For those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement, the apprenticeships English and maths minimum requirement is Entry Level 3 and British Sign Language qualification is an alternative to English qualifications for whom this is their primary language

About this company
Vaplas Ltd are predominantly a plastics machining company. Occasionally we also work with metals i.e. aluminium. We offer a CNC routing, turning and milling service along side a fabrication service of the highest quality, where we manufacture things such as tanks, machine guards and many other bespoke items. Our machined parts are used in a wide variety of ways including medical, industrial and are always manufactured to the highest of standards.
After this apprenticeship
Ideally the right candidate would become a permanent staff member after the completion of their apprenticeship.
