Summary

This is an alternative to university for people who have a passion for becoming an engineer in the Fire & Security industry. You will be trained in Intruder Alarms, CCTV and Fire alarms.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Duties are varied and will include:

▪ First fix / pulling cabling through etc.

▪ Second fix / affixing equipment to walls etc.

▪ Use of a range of hand tools and a cordless drill

▪ Completion of onsite paperwork and liaising with customers

▪ Service and maintenance of equipment that has already been installed

▪ Adhering to safe working practices

Applicants should be keen to learn, engaging and proactive to propel their career and develop skills as they progress through the course

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Comply with safety legislation, codes of practice, risk assessments, method statements, safe systems of work and apply control measures.
  • Complete functionality tests of systems and components during commissioning systems.
  • Apply and implement system design, planning and installations including additional components to existing systems.
  • Carry out takeover procedure, diagnose and repair faults.
  • Operate ICT equipment and systems to store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or receive digital data and electronic information.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability, regulations and standards.
  • Complete functionality tests of systems and components during handover of systems.
  • Carries out risk assessments.
  • Communicate with others verbally for example, internal and external customers, colleagues, and managers using sector specific terminology.
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, as part of a team. Consult and engage with occupants or others who are or could be affected by work (for example vulnerable, older, and disabled people) and respond appropriately.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders using sector specific terminology through written means.

Your training plan

The successful applicant will work towards the Fire, Emergency & Security Systems Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard and will also apply for their apprentice ECS card.

Will be required to attend day release at Access Training on Team Valley, Gateshead (this may be 1 day per week or 1 day per fortnight dependent upon the phase of the course you are on.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)
