Hours

Monday - Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm, including lunch break. Flexibility on start and finish time can be accommodated to suit candidate, as long as key hours remain in the office. College working times may slightly vary. There will be no evening or weekend working.

What you'll do at work

Supporting the lead civil engineer
Producing drawings with a high level or accuracy to support technical submissions using AutoCad including preliminary design drawings of internal site layouts including car parks, footways, cycleways and servicing areas
Swept path analysis using AutoTrack
Preliminary design of access and junction layouts
Visibility assessment
Producing other drawing figures for report
Liaising with other team members, co-professionals and client
Some general admin duties including GIS

Apply engineering principles, using relevant scientific, theoretical and technical know-how to solve well-defined civil engineering problems
Apply civil engineering techniques, procedures and methods, and review the results, when measuring and testing, designing, installing, commissioning, maintaining or operating civil engineering systems
Employ a range of advanced mathematical, statistical and data interpretation tools, using analytical and computational methods to interpret and solve civil engineering problems
Interpret and compare performance information to choose compliant materials, components or parts
Select and use technical literature and other sources of information and data to address well-defined civil engineering problems
Produce and interpret civil engineering technical drawings, designs, and models, using analytical and computer-based software packages, recognising the limitations of the software used
Produce civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, procedures, codes of practice, regulations, and legislation
Comply with, and encourage others to demonstrate, statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures and regulation
Complete risk assessments to identify, evaluate and mitigate risks
Apply principles of sustainable development, and assess the impact of these in their work
Employ project management techniques, measuring and recording progress against civil engineering project plans
Assess and report on quality using appropriate management and assurance systems and continuous improvement processes
Identify and use resources, equipment and technology to meet project requirements, including specifications, budget and timescales
Monitor and manage individual performance, and supervise others, recognising the need to comply with appropriate codes of practice and equality, diversity & inclusion (EDI) requirements
Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, using appropriate engineering terminology and conventions
Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
Plan, undertake and review their own professional competence, updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance

Your training plan

The course content will be undertaken on either day release or in scheduled blocks on the college campus in Leeds city centre. The remainder of the time will be spent in the office (Pudsey) supporting the team, with some visits to site (accompanying other members of staff).

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

maths / science / english (grade Minimum 5)

Desirable qualifications

A Level in:

2 relevant eg maths/science (OR BTEC) (grade Pass)

BTEC in:

civil engineering or similar (OR A-LEVEL) (grade Pass)

Other requirements

Drivers Licence would be advantageous but not essential. Candidates wanting to defer careers until early 2026 will be considered. Note: Predicted grades for A levels can be used for your application.

Via Solutions are a small family run business, based in Pudsey, Leeds and have been operating since 2008. Our main work involves providing transport advise and highway engineering design services to support planning applications and construction. This Level 4 course provides a solid foundation for those working in the Civil Engineering Industry, equipping students with the core knowledge and practical skills needed to contribute effectively to infrastructure projects. This course will provide a stepping stone to further study, this course prepares students for progression to a Level 6 qualification, such as a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering. Graduates will be well-positioned to take on junior engineering roles in the industry while continuing their professional development. This is an opportunity to develop a professional consultancy career and work on a wide variety of projects.
