Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

  • You will have the opportunity to work alongside highly skilled & experienced vehicle technicians working on ever changing vehicles in our fully equipped workshops. This will involve working on electrical & mechanical vehicle systems. New technologies & fault diagnosing systems are constantly being introduced and developed
  • Understanding the importance of good housekeeping & working in line with the latest Health & Safety Standards
  • Will always work alongside an experienced & highly trained apprentice mentor/technician to gain valuable experience & knowledge
  • Will complete service & inspection work ensuring our customers vehicles are maintained & operate to the highest standard
  • Use the latest diagnostic software, tools & techniques to carry out complex diagnostic work on the various systems on the vehicles

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop. Segregate waste for disposal or recycling. Comply with industry environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrate due regard for own safety and that of others in the workshop and minimise risk of injury and vehicle damage.
  • Carry out fundamental tasks associated with removal and replacement procedures on a vehicle.
  • Obtain diagnostic and repair information.
  • Interpret diagnostic information and use electrical wiring diagrams to determine system serviceability.
  • Use a range of diagnostic equipment.
  • Follow recognised diagnostic procedures, logical diagnostic sequence and apply advanced diagnostic principles and problem-solving techniques to establish faults.
  • Report faults using company procedures and recommend suitable further actions.
  • Follow recognised repair procedures to complete a wide range of repairs including those which involve complex procedures, or in depth knowledge.
  • Test the function of repaired and fitted components.
  • Adhere to business processes and complete documentation following workplace procedures.
  • Use ICT to create emails, word-process documents and carry out web based searches.
  • Complete a range of services and inspect and prepare a vehicle to the required quality standard for handover to the customer.

Your training plan

  • Northside’s training partner during the apprenticeship will be Doncaster GTA
  • Doncaster GTA is an independent training provider based in Doncaster and Sheffield
  • GTA has been delivering training to apprentices for the past 50 years in the motor industry and has the best pass and progression rates in the country
  • You will work in a Northside workshop where you will gain and hone your skills, knowledge and behaviour in relation to the servicing, inspecting, diagnosing and repairing of a range of vehicles which come through our workshops
  • You will attend Doncaster GTA one day per week with the rest of the week being spent with one of our highly skilled apprentice mentors/technicians in the workshop

More training information

  • At the end of each year, at college, you will need to pass a gateway exam to move into the next year
  • The apprenticeship could take up to three years, but it can be completed sooner if the apprentice gains the experience and knowledge to take the gateway exams earlier

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 9-4)
  • Maths (grade 9-4)

To be a successful candidate you will have to complete a four-stage interview process which will include: *Successful CV *Formal Interview with site general manager and group training manager. *One day work experience/trial in workshop along with written competency test. *Formal Interview with Doncaster GTA

After this apprenticeship

Northside are committed to supporting all apprentices through their apprenticeships in conjunction with Doncaster GTA.

Once the apprentice has successfully completed their apprenticeship, they will then complete:

  • IMI Level 3 Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Qualification
  • Irtec Training and attain Mercedes-Benz Maintenance Technician level accreditation
  • Each year a Mercedes-Benz training pathway/PDP is put in place for each after-sales staff member
