We’re looking for a passionate Junior IT Engineer to join our team in an apprenticeship/entry-level role. You don’t need professional experience — just a genuine enthusiasm for technology, whether that’s building PCs, helping friends with tech problems, or experimenting with IT projects.

At Optionbox, we provide comprehensive IT services to a wide variety of customers, from sole traders to organizations with up to 300 users. Position Summary:

We are looking for a passionate and eager-to-learn Junior IT Engineer to join our team in an apprenticeship or entry-level capacity. You don’t need a solid foundation of professional experience, but you must demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm for information technology — whether you’ve built your own PC, helped friends or family with IT issues, tinkered with networks, or explored IT projects in your own time.

You will work alongside senior engineers to gain hands-on experience supporting our diverse customer base, which ranges from single-person businesses to organizations with 300 users. You’ll help deliver IT support and services including Microsoft 365 administration, on-premises and hybrid Active Directory environments, network installations, and more.

Desirable (not required):

  • Any prior hands-on IT experience through work, internships, volunteering, or personal projects.
  • Relevant IT studies or certifications (e.g., GCSEs, college-level IT courses, CompTIA IT Fundamentals).

Your duties and responsibilities in this role will consist of:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Learn to administer and support Microsoft 365 and Active Directory environments, including Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, and related services.
  • Help install and configure network equipment such as routers, switches, and wireless access points.
  • Provide first-line IT support, escalating issues as needed to senior team members.
  • Assist with telephony systems and broadband installations for clients.
  • Accurately document solutions, configurations, and procedures.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to a wide range of clients, from sole traders to larger organisations.
  • Take part in ongoing training and learning to develop your IT skills.

  • Use basic scripting to execute the relevant tasks for example PowerShell, Linux
  • Carry out routine maintenance across systems, (such as IT, Communications), ensuring organisational compliance at all times
  • Apply the necessary security, in line with access and/or encryption requirements
  • Use a range of Cabling or Connectors equipment in line with technical requirements for example physically or remotely
  • Test and evaluate network environments
  • Monitor performance and usage of a network
  • Deploy applications on a network
  • Set up storage and data access for staff
  • Apply necessary security measures, in line with access requirements to a network
  • Carry out routine maintenance across network systems, ensuring organisational compliance
  • Monitor network-related workloads including DNS and firewalls
  • Install or undertake basic upgrades, either physically or remotely
  • Establish digital communication or telecommunications systems through, for example cabling and connecting equipment.
  • Identify a range of tools and or diagnostic equipment, for example, Hardware or Software components, to resolve Communications or Telecommunications requirements.
  • Undertake basic telecommunications activities, in response to an allocated task, designated responsibilities, instructions or customer’s requirements.

Your training plan

Firebrand’s sector-leading Level 3 Information Communication Technician (L3ICT) Apprenticeship Programme trains apprentices to deliver efficient operation and control of the IT and Telecommunications infrastructure and to deliver and support the information systems needs of an organisation. Options include pathways for Support Technician, Network Technician and Digital Communications Technician.

Firebrands course is delivered either Online (online live instructor led), or face to face in the classroom environment (your choice). Our Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), Learning Mentors (LMs) and world-leading trainers prepare apprentices to work across multiple sectors.

Completion of this apprenticeship will provide learners with the following world class vendor certifications in addition to the Information Communication Technician apprenticeship:

  • Microsoft Certified Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900)
  • CompTIA IT Fundamentals+
  • Certiport IT Specialist Networking
  • Microsoft Certified Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

5 GCSE's (grade (A*-C/9-4 or equivalent))
