Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Some of the duties involved in this apprenticeship include but are not limited to:
- Inspection, maintenance, and repair of HGVs
- Completion of related paperwork
- Prepare vehicles for MOT
- Conducting break test, electrical work and breakdowns of HGVs
- Conduct routine servicing, safety checks and fault finding on all fleet vehicles
- Ensure health and safety and company procedures are adhered to
- Undertake any other duties that may be necessary, that are appropriate to the level of the role

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
- The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
- Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
- The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
- Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
- Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
- Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
- Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
- Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
- To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.

- Training will require attending college one day per week (during term time) or 6 hours a week at your place of work during non-term times

Essential qualifications
GCSE in:
- English (grade 4/C)
- Maths (grade 4/C)

About this company
Solution Transport Ltd was founded in May 2004 by Graham Richardson (Director). Graham, who had worked in many varied management roles within the bulk haulage industry, decided to use his wealth of knowledge and logistics experience and set up his own company. The company started with 2 units subcontracting work from various sources, this grew very quick over a short period of time. The company moved to its current location in September 2013, the depot having an office, workshop and HGV parking facilities. The fleet stands at 12 44t gross units.
