Heating Services Apprentice

Summary

We are looking for a Heating Services Apprentice to join our team and develop the skills needed to install and maintain domestic gas heating systems and appliances. Under guidance and training, you’ll carry out installations in line with safety regulations and building standards, while delivering excellent service to CHP customers.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Under guidance, undertake gas heating engineering and plumbing duties relating to gas appliance installations and associated works, adhering to manufacturer’s instructions when installing appliances.

Under guidance and training, undertake the domestic gas installation of new and existing domestic heating systems and related DHW cylinders and control in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, Gas safety Installation and use regulations 1998 act., Part J, Part L and Part P of the building regulations and CDM regulations 2015.

Carry out works to comply with current health and safety (H&S) legislation, reporting any unsafe work practices to your line manager.

Provide excellent service to CHP’s customers and act in accordance with CHP procedures to meet a high level of customer satisfaction, using your knowledge of relevant policies, procedures and services provided by CHP to give appropriate advice to customers.

Participate in all training as provided to achieve an enhanced level of trade skills and multi-skilling tasks, including undertaking the Level 3 Gas Engineering Operative apprenticeship.

What you'll learn

Course contents

Comply with health and safety practices.
Install and commission a range of primary appliances, for example central heating boilers, gas cookers, space heaters.
Install and commission a range of secondary appliances, for example laundry appliances, water heaters and gas meters (not exceeding 6m3 in capacity).
Carry out testing and safety checks applicable to the appliance chimney or flue type.
Carry out routine maintenance and servicing of appliances and components.
Identify and rectify faults in appliances and components.
Decommission appliances and systems.
Isolate the electrical supply to the appliance.
Conduct electrical safety checks pre- and post-work.
Undertake and document risk assessments.
Source, read and follow technical documentation associated with equipment and installation requirements.
Select, use and maintain tools, equipment and test instrumentation.
Select and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
Check and action inspection records and schedules.
Identify unsafe situations or conditions and take action under IGEM G/11 Gas industry unsafe situations procedure.
Use digital technology to access job, appliance and customer information.
Complete and maintain work records including appliance and customer data in accordance with General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).
Communicate verbally with customers, including the provision of guidance on energy and efficiency measures specific to the appliance or system being worked on.
Recycle, reuse, return defective components and dispose of waste.
Carry out and record planned and unplanned learning and development activities.
Apply equity, diversity and inclusion procedures.

Your training plan

You'll attend college one day per week and the other four days a week will be spent in and around Essex working with our qualified gas engineers to learn on the job. Other training including health and safety courses will be provided for you.
