Summary

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and hard-working Cleaning Hygiene Operative to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience in household management and cleaning and possess a keen eye for detail, ensuring that the hotel is cleaned and serviced to our exceptionally high standards in an allocated time.

Wage

£11,778 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Shift work between Monday – Sunday 9am – 3pm. Due to the nature of the hotel, hours will vary depending on the time of year. Although hours will not drop below 30 or exceed 40, during summer months it would be closer to 40 each week.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

As part of the housekeeping team our housekeepers play a vital role in ensuring our rooms and front of house areas look first class every day by delivering the highest standards of housekeeping and ensuring our guests receive the highest level of standards, so they come back time and time again.

Main duties/responsibilities include, but are not restricted to:

  • Perform a variety of cleaning activities such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and polishing
  • Ensure all rooms are cared for and inspected according to standards
  • Protect equipment and make sure there are no inadequacies
  • Notify superiors on any damages, deficits, and disturbances
  • Deal with reasonable complaints/requests with professionalism and patience
  • Check stocking levels of all consumables and replace when appropriate
  • Adhere strictly to rules regarding health and safety and be aware of any company-related practices
  • Conduct deep cleans of bedrooms and function rooms several times a year

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Conduct tasks according to documented safe ways of working.
  • Select and use the most appropriate cleaning agent appropriate to different surface types.
  • Use and dispose of chemicals following COSHH regulations and apply safety data sheets and dilution rates.
  • Deal with routine and non-routine waste in line with organisation policies and environmental disposal legislation.
  • Prepare cleaning materials and machinery and check that all electrical equipment complies with PAT testing requirements.
  • Clean cleaning equipment and machinery after use.
  • Identify potential sources of infection and put controls in place.
  • Recognise the signs of infestation and report and monitor the problem according to local procedures.
  • Recognise and respond to rapid response clean requests.
  • Conduct scheduled and periodic cleaning, prioritising work where required.
  • Conduct cleaning and disinfection tasks.
  • Deliver housekeeping services including maintaining a clean storage environment, maintenance of equipment, stock control and rotation.
  • Take measures to ensure the security of cleaning equipment and materials, and premises.
  • Communicate with colleagues, clients, and other stakeholders professionally.
  • Use visual checks and objective auditing techniques to ensure that cleaning has been completed to contractual standards.
  • Identify and use correct methods for removal of contaminating material.
  • Comply with data protection legislation.
  • Use procedures for obtaining support.
  • Apply colour coding correctly to conduct cleaning safely and effectively.
  • Apply sustainable practices when carrying out duties.
  • Apply procedures for reporting shortages, incidents, accidents, and issues with delivering cleaning services.
  • Carry out and record different types of cleaning methods.
  • Use supplied data to plan cleaning tasks.
  • Engage with the audit and quality assurance process.
  • Use PPE and comply with the organisational uniform policy to maintain required levels of hygiene.
  • Conduct cleaning tasks to the appropriate hygiene standard to ensure infection prevention and control of the healthcare environment.
  • Disassemble and reassemble healthcare service user equipment in line with manufacturers’ instructions and National Standards of Healthcare Cleanliness.
  • Communicate with service users considering their possible emotional, mental health and physical issues.
  • Safely prepare an area for commercial cleaning.
  • Conduct cleaning tasks according to specialist commercial requirements.

Your training plan

You will be completing the Cleaning Hygiene Operative L2 Apprenticeship Standard with Darlington Borough Council Learning & Skills, Darlington. 

The Cleaning Hygiene Operative Apprenticeship is designed to equip participants with the fundamentals required to work in either the healthcare or commercial cleaning environment. The programme will be delivered remotely by an occupational expert to cover the core topics.

Throughout this Apprenticeship, participants will be supported by tutors who have worked in this environment and have gained many years of experience and who can truly support you to develop the skills and knowledge required to work in a wide range of commercial cleaning roles.

You will be working alongside experienced colleagues and upon successful completion of your apprenticeship, you will obtain:

  • Level 2 Cleaning Hygiene Operative Apprenticeship Standard
  • Functional Skills Level 2 in maths and English (if required)
  • Training will take place remotely
  • You will learn the theory and practical elements of the course
  • Gain the knowledge and developing skills to complete the apprenticeship
  • Regular remote meetings will take place between the apprentice, employer and tutor
  • During the course you will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to ensure these exceed the minimum requirements for the Cleaning Hygiene Operative Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard.

This is a very physically demanding role, with mainly all hands-on tasks. There are no direct bus route which stops at the hotel, South Shields Interchange is located 20 minutes’ walk away.
