Summary

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a large engineering business based in Sutton in Ashfield that provides engineering solutions to the water, energy and environmental industries as their new Metal Fabricator apprentice. You will be involved in marking out, cutting, fabrication and welding.

Wage

£14,918.80 to £24,126.96, depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Tasks covered during apprenticeship:

  • Interpretation of technical drawings
  • Fabrication of steel members
  • Checking size of section/length and pre-drilled holes against drawing
  • Ensuring all steel and relevant fittings are available and holes/plates are dressed correctly
  • Marking off sections for notching or the attachment as fittings as required
  • Flame cutting, grinding, tack welding and lifting operations
  • Ensuring best possible joints are used at all times
  • Mark weld sizes, load numbers, paint specifications to assist progression of fabrication at later stages
  • Ensure all paperwork is completed in accordance with ECS requirements
  • Assisting with welding where required
  • The use/storage of consumables/PPE
  • Identification of defects
  • Understanding and working to ECS Safe Systems of Works and procedures
  • Training and use of all associated equipment

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Work safely at all times, comply with health & safety legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Comply with environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Obtain, check and use the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation).
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity.
  • Undertake the work activity using the correct processes, procedures and equipment.
  • Carry out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing) using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment.
  • Deal promptly and effectively with problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel.
  • Complete any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work activity.
  • Restore the work area on completion of the activity and where applicable return any resources and consumables to the appropriate location.
  • Identify and follow correct Metal work instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
  • Mark out using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Cut and form Metal for the production or maintenance of fabricated products.
  • Produce and assemble Metal products to required specification and quality requirements.

Training schedule

  • An apprenticeship allows you to earn a wage, gain valuable work experience and industry specific competence
  • You will be expected to work towards the Metal Fabricator Level 3, with support from your employer and the Chesterfield College Group
  • As part of your apprenticeship, and dependent on your prior attainment, you may be required to complete maths and English Functional Skills which is an integral part of your apprenticeship
  • Upon successful completion you will be awarded additional certificates of recognition for these qualifications
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • English (grade 4/C or above)
  • Maths (grade 4/C or above)
