Summary

You will gain valuable accounting experience whilst working towards the AAT qualification. Full training will be provided to ensure a broad range of knowledge is gained. You will provide support to the team and gain a wide range of skills by supporting payroll, bookkeeping, accounting and tax return tasks using the latest cloud-based systems.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

In summary, the aim is to develop a full understanding and knowledge of:

  • Client bookkeeping utilising cloud-based accountancy software, primarily Xero, Dext, Sage and Quickbooks.
  • Preparing weekly and monthly payroll for all clients using Brightpay.
  • Preparing and submitting monthly and quarterly VAT returns to HMRC.
  • Preparing monthly CIS contractor returns.
  • Completing self-assessment returns for sole traders and private individuals.
  • Assisting the accountants with year-end company accounts.
  • Dealing with client queries and correspondence.
  • Other ad-hoc duties as required including reception duties, meeting and greeting visitors, making drinks and generally making clients and visitors feel welcome to the firm.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Record transactional data.
  • Use the organisation’s standard tools and processes to examine data to identify transactional issues such as, reconciliations and inconsistencies between invoices.
  • Recognise and rectify routine errors, escalating as necessary.
  • Plan and review accounting and finance tasks.
  • Communicate with stakeholders to deliver accurate and timely results, avoiding jargon, using language tailored to the audience and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.
  • Use finance and accounting software packages to accurately input and manage data to contribute to routine accounting tasks.
  • Handle data and digital technology in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.

The training will be delivered in the workplace and at college (1 day per week during term time).

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)
