Sesame Access Systems Ltd designs, manufactures and installs award-winning wheelchair access lifts across the world. We are consistently innovating and pushing the boundaries of design and engineering. This apprenticeship will include international travel and exceptional learning. Our clients include the Bank of England and Sydney Opera House.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Communicate technical information with others at all levels, including technical reports and the use of digital tools.
  • Follow a methodical approach to engineering problem solving.
  • Establish and report engineering design briefs.
  • Produce mechanical and electrical designs / drawings / sketches using Computer Aided Design (CAD) and manual systems.
  • Model real-world mechanical systems efficiently.
  • Select the design solution for a given electro-mechanical engineering application and environment using data to inform their decisions.
  • Integrate electrical and mechanical engineering systems, considering new and emerging technologies.
  • Use appropriate equipment to develop and execute test plans to support electro-mechanical product validation and approval.
  • Design functional electronic systems and circuits from component level.
  • Write and document structured programming code for electro-mechanical systems.
  • Fabricate engineering components and assemblies using specialist manufacturing methods and hand fitting techniques.
  • Assemble, wire, program and test electrical equipment, motors and control systems.
  • Plan, manage and lead engineering projects.
  • Perform risk management for engineering activities.
  • Comply with statutory and organisational safety requirements.

Your training plan

Work-based training is at Sesame Access Systems Ltd, Unit 1, Cumberland Works, Wintersells Business Park, Byfleet, Surrey KT147LF.

80% work-based training + 20% university training.

1 day a week in the workshop is spent on university work.

You will follow a training programme, delivered by Sesame's Head Engineer and Sesame colleagues. Both on the job on site and workshop-based.

Essential qualifications

A Level in:

  • any (grade B)
  • Any preferably physics (grade B)
  • Maths (grade B)

This role includes physical work, outdoors work and some heavy lifting. Full training will be given. We will hold interviews and an assessment centre on 2nd and 3rd July 25

You will receive on the job training from our very knowledgeable Sesame Engineers, one of whom will also be your professional Mentor. Training will cover all aspects of Sesame lifts, including hydraulics, electrics, design, manufacture, fault finding, individual workplace projects, materials and manufacture, statics and dynamics, drive systems, hysteresis, thermodynamics, electrical control systems, computer aided design (CAD), understanding drawings etc. Your work based experience will compliment your studies.

After this apprenticeship

At the end of the 5 years, you will have a BEng (Hons) Degree in Electro-mechanical Engineering. We hope you will stay with Sesame, or you may decide to travel or experience other engineering companies. However, we really hope you return to Sesame.
