Summary
Our PE & Sports coach apprentice has an important role to play in improving the health & wellbeing of children by delivering fun, inclusive and engaging activities that help to change physical activity habits. The apprentice will support the delivery of PE in school, deliver extra-curricular clubs/lunch clubs, & support our sports competitions.

What you'll do at work
We are seeking to recruit enthusiastic and passionate apprentice to join the St. Michael’s team. This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidates to begin a career in physical education and school sport; gaining qualifications and practical experience within a school setting.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has a passion for engaging with children, young people and families through sport and physical activities and who is excited by our vision and what we do. You’ll learn how to coach to the highest standards working with children and young people, where you can use your skills to build your career and make a tangible difference.
Through training and mentoring, you will advance your skills and experience, learning school curriculum expectations and requirements, gaining the knowledge to teach and coach to exceptional standards. You’ll also take this knowledge beyond the ‘classroom’ and get involved in community-based / inter-school sports coaching activities – helping children to have fun whilst getting active in a wide range of ways.
We want to recruit the right candidate and employ for character over skills. The right person will be driven and ambitious, hardworking and committed, love working with children, and want to make a difference to the community of Handsworth. With these personal qualities and characteristics, we can support the successful candidate to develop and grow during their apprenticeship.
You’ll work alongside our experienced lead coach, teachers, and support staff to deliver a wide range of exciting sports-based activities, remembering that we use the word ‘sport’ to encompass all forms of physical activity, which aim at expressing or improving physical fitness, mental wellbeing and the formation of social relationships. Your week could include everything from breakfast club to after-school clubs, PE lessons, parent sports clubs, residential trips, adventure activities, themed school sports days, dance groups, cycling groups, group fitness classes, training sessions and inter-school sports competitions.
We are open to the right person either completing a Level 2 Community Activator Coach apprenticeship or a Level 4 Sports Coach apprenticeship.
The nature of roles and responsibilities for this role may include:
- Assisting in the creation of a fun, positive, safe and inclusive learning environments
- Supporting small groups and individuals in the teaching environment, for instance those with learning, physical or health plans, the least active or more able pupils
- Promoting key health messages and acting as a community 'activator' to engage young people in developing lifelong healthy, active lifestyles
- Setting up activities, clearing away resources, looking after all sports equipment (ensuring it is fit for use, in the right place and in good order), maintaining wall displays etc. as guided by teaching staff
- Developing and assisting with the provision of breakfast, lunchtime and after school sports clubs
- Supporting the co-ordination of sporting events, willing to accompany students on educational visits, outings and sporting / PE events as supervised by the teacher or senior person responsible
- Assisting with the organisation and delivery of various events across school, including fixtures and inter-house competitions and events
- Working alongside the coaching / teaching team to deliver high quality PE sessions
- Additional duties and administrative tasks may be required on occasions as consummate with the role
- Undertaking training and development opportunities as agreed with your line manager

Course contents
- Planning and adapting sessions and activities that respond to customer feedback and encourage customers to develop a lifelong activity habit.
- Coaching or leading pre-planned sport or physical activity sessions that are attractive to the target audience(s) and develop motivational relationships with customers.
- Promoting a physical activity offer, (including but not exclusively) organised play and sport in the community which supports individuals on their behaviour change journey.
- Working collaboratively with sports clubs and other community assets – including volunteers, public services, youth workers, the police and community champions.
- Supporting customers to co-produce rewarding volunteering opportunities.
- Supporting families to participate together in sport and physical activity.
- Working effectively with customer insight to overcome individual, community and societal barriers to participation in physical activity and sport.
- Contributing to the employer’s design of activities and services and practising the employer’s organisation’s values, policies and procedures.
- Contributing to teams that deliver community events and festivals.
- Supporting organisations to evaluate, develop and promote sessions and other opportunities such as outdoor group exercise and informal social play.
- Maintaining personal safety and wellbeing, as well as that of customers.
- Managing disruptive behaviours from individuals within the group setting.
- Encouraging customers to be regularly active – both formally and informally – within sports clubs or leisure facilities including open-space.
- Effectively using social media and technology, appropriately, to deliver targeted messages to identified customer groups for example children, teenagers, adults and older adults.
- Effectively monitor and evaluate activities, sessions and projects using technology platforms to maintain accurate records and produce timely reports.

Other requirements
Candidates must be confident and happy to travel to and from the school location each day. Please only apply for this apprenticeship if the location suits your mode of transport and travel times etc. This post will involve physical activity so will require apprentices to be interested and passionate about sports and physical activity, and have sufficient a level of fitness. Candidates will need to be eager to work with children to enable their participation in activity. You’ll be someone who brings the energy that gets people moving and approach everything you do with a fantastic sense of fun. You’ll work hard and thrive off seeing children and young people enjoying being active, learning new skills, making friends and feeling able to safely talk about life. You’ll be passionate, creative, and ambitious, ready to nurture children and young people to live healthy and active lifestyles. We are looking for someone who loves to use sport to connect with people and is keen to learn the skills needed to be an excellent sports coach working in a school environment, but also out in the wider community too.
