Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Responsibilities will include:

  • To prepare accurate, competitive and detailed technical quotes based on information received from customers
  • Prioritise work appropriately to deliver quotes within set deadline or 5 working days to maintain company’s customer service targets
  • Load assessment on lintels using ‘BS5977-1: Method for assessment of load’ based on Architect’s and Structural Engineer’s drawings
  • Specify standard products, and custom-made items designed specifically for relevant projects
  • Design special production drawings for manufacture using AutoCAD or other Drawing Tool
  • Prepare lintel calculations at the customer’s request to satisfy building control authority
  • Periodic office and site visits to develop customer relationships and to measure up/ solve technical issues
  • Collate information and prepare clear and structured technical reports on findings from site

  • Apply engineering principles to solve engineering problems: scientific, theoretical and technical principles.
  • Apply civil engineering techniques, procedures and methods, and review and evaluate the results, including measuring and testing, designing, installing, commissioning, constructing, maintaining or operating civil engineering components and systems; consider how continuous improvement can contribute to improved performance.
  • Employ mathematical, statistical and data interpretation tools, using analytical and computational methods, and apply an integrated or systems-based approach.
  • Identify, interpret and compare information to select materials, components or parts used in civil engineering.
  • Research, collect, select and evaluate technical literature and other sources of data and information to address, analyse and evaluate civil engineering problems.
  • Produce civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, policies, codes of practice, regulations, and legislation.
  • Select and apply computational and analytical techniques to model civil engineering problems, recognising the limitations of the techniques employed.
  • Contribute to the design, development and implementation of civil engineering solutions, and evaluate their effectiveness in the context of the whole project life cycle.
  • Manage and comply with statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures and regulation, and contribute to improvements in health, safety and welfare, within their own area of responsibility.
  • Complete risk assessments to identify, evaluate, manage and mitigate risks.
  • Apply principles of sustainable development and evaluate their effectiveness on the whole project lifecycle of civil engineering solutions.
  • Manage engineering activities that contribute to sustainable development and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).

Your training plan

The role will allow you to access “on and off the job training” gaining knowledge and hands on experience of supporting our teams in their delivery of exciting projects. Typically, an Apprentice will work 4-days per week with one day a week release to university. By the end of your apprenticeship, you will not only have gained a wealth of industry knowledge and experience, but you will also have worked towards and achieved a Bsc (Hons) in Civil Engineering from Derby University.

The apprenticeship runs over a minimum of four to four and a half years and incorporates a part-time day release honours degree (other study modes negotiable) with on-campus teaching at the University and online delivery through University of Derby Online Learning (UDOL).

You will study the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering (Apprenticeship). Your academic apprenticeship is specified in the Programme Specification and involves assessments which are specially designed to include work-based learning.

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4 or above)
  • Mathematics (grade 4 or above)

A Level in:

  • Any subject (grade C or above)
  • mathematics (grade C or above)
  • physical science or equivalent (grade C or above)

Other in:

or equivalent required (grade 96 points)
