EN:Able Futures, an award winning apprenticeship employer are partnering with Essential Construction Services (ECS) who are offering a fantastic opportunity for an Apprentice Civil Engineering Technician to work with them and learn the skills and knowledge required to succeed within the Civils industry, including Surveying.

The listed wage (£16588 is based on an under 18 doing 40 hours per week) If you are 18 or above, you will work 45 hours per week, and therefore earn £18511 Per Annum)

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

As an apprentice you will support an experienced engineer and learn how to undertake:-

Civil Engineering - Setting Out:

Set out, survey and check – for housing, roads, deep drainage, earthworks, but not limited to these items of construction

Surveying:

Surveys undertaken to any specification for the clients’ requirements. Generally, topographic surveys, land surveys, as-built earthworks surveys

A brief overview of the role that the successful candidate will train and work towards:

  • Graduate Civil Engineer/Land Surveyor
  • Completion of BTEC through to HNC in civil engineering or equivalent
  • Fully computer literate, Microsoft word and excel, some knowledge of AutoCAD and LSS (separate courses are available, but we will teach the candidate the basic operations of both software’s)
  • During their training, they will be required to set out, survey and check – for housing, roads, deep drainage, earthworks, but not limited to these items of construction
  • Must be an excellent communicator, they will have to liaise closely with contract managers, project managers, site managers, foreman and site operatives
  • We work on a site by site visiting basis, full days and half days, so no day will ever be the same. We operate Topcon equipment, we have a fleet of Robotic Total Stations and Hyper V GPS units.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Apply appropriate civil engineering principles, techniques, and methods, including mathematical, scientific, and technical know-how, to civil engineering and the construction process
  • Apply key principles, techniques and methods of data and technical information collection, analysis, and evaluation to support the delivery of civil engineering models, designs, and technical solutions
  • Operate appropriate software packages for data gathering and analysis, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) or Building Information Modelling (BIM), to create technical drawings, models and designs using relevant conventions and engineering terminology
  • Apply statutory health, safety and welfare policies, procedures, and regulations in the civil engineering environment, using risk management processes, procedures, and documentation
  • Support and contribute to the production or modification of civil engineering technical solutions in accordance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and procedures and codes of practice
  • Apply environmental policies and sustainable principles in civil engineering projects, recognising the need to reduce carbon use, lower emissions and plan for wider sustainability
  • Plan, carry out and manage own work in line with quality assurance, recognising the wider implications to customer needs, and within cost and resource limitations
  • Consider equality, diversity and inclusion in the delivery of civil engineering projects
  • Apply document control processes and procedures using the approved processes, maintaining quality compliance when creating or amending engineering documentation
  • Communicate using appropriate methods for the audience, and incorporate relevant and appropriate terms, standards, and data
  • Apply ethical principles to civil engineering projects, including the secure use of data and information
  • Plan, undertake and review their own professional competence, regularly updating and reviewing their CPD to improve performance

Your training plan

The successful applicant will work towards a Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician qualification, which will take 36 months (plus End Point Assessment) and will be delivered through Leeds College of Building.
