As a Heavy Vehicle Apprentice, you will be working alongside experienced team members to service, inspect and repair vehicles.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
You will have the opportunity to gain new skills and knowledge whilst carrying out maintenance and repairs on heavy vehicles over 3.5 tonnes in your workplace, this will include mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical vehicle systems.
You will be immersed in the fast paced and thriving world of the automotive industry. The tasks you will face will be ever changing, with new technologies and diagnostic techniques constantly being introduced.
Some of the tasks you will be working on include:
- Servicing vehicles – carrying out checks and general maintenance according to the manufacturers’ guidelines.
- Repairing and replacing faulty parts and components.
- Maintaining repair and service records

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
- The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
- Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
- Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
- The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
- Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
- Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
- Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
- Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
- Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
- To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.
Your training plan
The apprenticeship training is delivered via weekly block releases at S&B throughout a year, learning will also take place in the workplace and a S&B Development Coach and Workplace Mentor are allocated to support and monitor your progress to help you reach your goals and manage your workload. Your employer will pay you when you are attending weekly training blocks at S&B.

To be considered for this apprenticeship you must have GCSEs, Functional Skills or Key Skills at grade C/4 or above in English and maths (or equivalent), If your grades are below this, we will discuss your options for taking functional skills in Maths and/or English. As well as this, predicated grades are accepted, and work experience or knowledge is beneficial but not essential.
As a result, you will receive the following:
- Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship Standard
- Level 2 Functional Skills in maths & English (if not already exempt)
