Beckers is the number one supplier of coil coatings and a leading supplier of Industrial paints worldwide. Beckers is looking for candidates to join their team within the Quality Control Laboratory to undertake Laboratory assistance testing, batch adjustment, release and recording data.

8:30am - 4:45pm Monday to Thursday & 8:30am - 3:45pm Friday (45 mins unpaid lunch). There may be times when you will be required to work an alternative shift pattern which is 4:00pm-11:45pm Monday to Thursday & 3:00pm-8:30pm Friday.

Work

What you'll do at work

Working within Quality Control, this role is to provide technical assistance by undertaking product development and service work under the direction and guidance of the Laboratory Section Leaders and undertaking testing, tinting and validation of batches whilst supporting the business in safely maintaining the highest quality products to satisfy customer and regulatory requirements.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To undertake practical laboratory work, including paint formulation, colour matching, small-scale paint manufacture, paint application, physical testing of paints, process inspections, chemical resistance testing of paints, use of spray equipment and booths, record keeping, including lab books, reports, enquiries, timesheets, samples & panels
  • Assist with analytical work, including paint solids determination, flashpoint determination
  • Assist with support work, including supervision of batches in production, auditing, investigation of production problems, customer complaints, and finding re-work outlets for redundant paint
  • Undertake administrative work relating to testing, batch validation and stock control via company computer systems
  • Liaise, troubleshoot and support both production with and in root cause analysis and correction of quality issues
  • Demonstrate high personal standards in relation to both ensuring customer requirements are met via production scheduling and priorities and with regards to QEHS activities
  • Maintaining quality control management system records
  • Carry out process inspections
  • Archiving of approved samples and records
  • Maintain electronic records and generate certificates of conformance for customers
  • Engage in proactive stock management
  • To be competent and fully compliant in the safe operation of equipment, including general lab equipment & ovens, calibration of laboratory equipment, and operation of accelerated weathering cabinets
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment through daily housekeeping inspections and adherence to 5S practices
  • Highlight unsafe conditions, taking reasonable care of oneself and others. To comply with Beckers Health and Safety policy and any Beckers procedures /rules that apply to your role
  • Adhere to the Becker’s code of conduct at all times
  • Labelling, storage and disposal of approved samples and records
  • Dispose of all waste generated in accordance with Environmental Management Procedures
  • Undertake training where required and appropriate
  • Promote and engage in the communication and implementation of Beckers’ values and culture

What you'll learn

  • Comply with health and safety policies and procedures including HASWA, COSHH, risk assessments, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), manual handling, emergency procedures.
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping, in accordance with organisation Standard Procedures
  • Order and control stocks of laboratory materials where required
  • Identify, organise and use resources effectively to complete tasks applying the concepts of resource efficiency e.g energy, water and waste
  • Adhere to internal and external regulatory requirements e.g. GLP, GMP, GDP
  • Prepare for, and perform, laboratory experiments, tests or tasks following any specified methodologies to provide reliable, accurate data e.g. weighing, pipetting, filtering, spectroscopic techniques, chromatography techniques
  • Demonstrate technical competence in the use of specified instruments and equipment
  • Report faults and seek diagnostic advice to maintain equipment in good working order, including calibration where required
  • Complete documentation proficiently
  • Keep accurate records of laboratory work undertaken and results
  • Contribute to the preparation of reports.
  • Use simple statistical techniques for data presentation and evaluation e. g calculation of median and standard deviation, production of graphs
  • Demonstrate problem solving techniques including identification of sources of error and how they can be reduced e.g. human error
  • Use standard software packages and applications e.g. Microsoft Office suite
  • Use Laboratory Information Management systems to support their work
  • Address non-routine problems with samples and instrumentation, within defined areas
  • Identify relevant information from scientific sources e.g. supervisors, literature etc. in order to contribute to solutions
  • Participate in continuous performance improvement of systems and processes relevant to the work environment e.g. workplace organisation techniques, accreditation (e.g. ISO, UKAS) and proficiency testing.
  • Evaluate data, recognise and call attention to anomalous or unusual results

Your training plan

As an apprentice you will complete a Laboratory Technician Level 3 qualification with a national Training Provider.

Your Apprenticeship Training will focus on your job, is completed at the workplace, and you will be allocated a tutor and a study session in your working week.
