What you'll do at work
Specialist Power Systems in Kempston, Bedford are looking for two apprentices to join their team and gain an engineering qualification. Please note you will have to be able to drive for this role.
Specialist Power Systems is an established and leading supplier of Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), generators, and other standby power products, with a reputation built on exceptional customer service, and a team of power experts who are the best in the industry. Their in-house team of factory trained engineers and technical help offer 24/7/365 round the clock support with guaranteed engineer response times to make sure critical power is ready when needed.
The apprentices will be Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) & Battery Service Engineers and will reports to the Service Manager.
As an apprentice you will be trained to be able to meet the daily maintenance, commissioning and repair needs of the customer’s UPS & battery equipment. Establish and maintain proper business relationships with customers and peers as well as performing necessary administrative duties as required and other duties as assigned.
The main purpose of job will be to complete training and assist Senior UPS engineers by attending customer sites including onsite & manufacturers training to be able to become a UPS Service Engineer.

However you will not need to travel to the office each day to clock in unless, you are required to collect parts for a job or, meet another engineer to drive to site together to be more economical. You would travel from home to your place of work that has been assigned for the working day, traveling to customers sites based within the UK and abroad. A suitable van, mobile phone and laptop will be provided.
Hours of Work:
If your scheduled work includes longer than 12 hours in a day including travelling, the Company will provide overnight accommodation. Overtime and weekend working will be required. Out of pocket expenses including subsistence are included.
Your main tasks will be as follows:
Troubleshooting and repair on designated equipment. (UPS & Batteries) To diagnose failures and affect repairs unsupervised on customers sites.
Completing Preventative Maintenance and field modifications. (UPS & Batteries) Identify potential failures and demonstrate correct operation of designated equipment.
Keeping up to date on administrative responsibilities such as maintaining customer service logs and internal service records in a timely manner.
Completed job sheets and other site paperwork to be completed and sent to the main office no later than the next working day.
Attend all training courses and meetings as required and assist the development of colleagues. Having attended training to be able to work with the new equipment on customers sites unsupervised.
Observe and adhere to company health & safety guidelines and contribute to a healthy and safe working environment. To work safely and respect the safety of others.
Ensure that follow-up work requirements are referred to the appropriate staff and recorded on the job sheet to enable necessary quotations, action and recommendations to customers. Job sheets and site paper work to be completed and sent to the main office no later than the next working day.
Maintaining tools, PPE and any test equipment, and ensuring they are properly calibrated and fit for purpose. All PPE, tools any engineer’s equipment to be in good condition and fit for use.
Your salary will be a range, depending on experience.

Due to the nature of the business, customers often request outside hours working, so weekends and evening working will be frequent.
