Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
The vacancy is an opportunity for someone who is interested in pursuing a career in Engineering. If successful, the apprenticeship could consist of up to 4 years' learning.
The first year will be based full time, Mon to Fri, at Training 2000 Ltd in the Engineering workshop where the apprentice will gain an insight into Engineering, and start to develop new skills relevant to the tasks they will be completing once they return to their respective employer.
As well as this, they will also begin their Further Education course, BTEC Diploma, City and Guilds, which will be 1 day a week classroom-based learning.
Your job role will consist of different tasks such as
- Report to assigned mentor.
- To train in the use of machinery / equipment under the direction of skilled and competent workers.
- To work with one of the trained fabricator / welders on specific jobs for clients, learning to weld and fabricate steelwork to drawings as required.
- Make known any suggestions for improvement regarding any aspects of the workplace conditions (Health and Safety) to mentor.
- Be aware of the impact of ISO 9001 and BS1090 standards in terms of day-to-day working.
- Ensure that the work area is always kept clean and tidy.
- Carry out duties as requested by mentor.
- Remove waste materials to the relevant waste handling services.
- Ensure all tools and equipment are safe for use and stored responsibly.
- Apprentices are trained on all rules and procedures within the factory including all health and safety regulations.
- Be aware of the importance of wearing all necessary Personal Protective Equipment i.e. Steel toe capped boots, glasses & ear protection.
- Ensure that weekly timesheet is booked up correctly, signed and returned by Monday 08:30am to the admin office.

- Obtain, check and use the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation).
- Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity.
- Undertake the work activity using the correct processes, procedures and equipment.
- Carry out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing) using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment.
- Deal promptly and effectively with problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel.
- Complete any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work activity.
- Restore the work area on completion of the activity and where applicable return any resources and consumables to the appropriate location.
- Identify and follow correct Metal work instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
- Mark out using appropriate tools and techniques.
- Cut and form Metal for the production or maintenance of fabricated products.
- Produce and assemble Metal products to required specification and quality requirements.
- Identify and follow correct joining instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
- Carry out the relevant preparation before starting the joining fabrication activity.
- Set up, check, adjust and use joining and related equipment.
- Weld joints in accordance with approved welding procedures and quality requirements.

Your training plan
The apprentice will be working towards completing the Metal Fabricator Standard, which will include the following:
- Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
- Level 3 Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge)
- Functional skills - English, Maths (if not already achieved).
Requirements
Essential qualifications
GCSE or equivalent in:
- English (grade 4/C or above)
- Maths (grade 4/C or above)
Desirable qualifications
GCSE or equivalent in:
- ICT (grade 4/C or above)
- Science (grade 4/C or above)
