Summary
STARS is a short term, intensive reablement programme that is available to help people to live at home following a stay in hospital, or if there has been a change in a person’s care and support needs. The aim of the service is to support people to regain independence, rebuild confidence and relearn skills that might have been lost due to illness.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
Principal Duties:
1. Learn how to assist and enable clients to achieve daily living activities, which could include but is not exhaustive:
- Maintaining personal hygiene and appearance
- Ensuring intake of drinks, fluids and food is documented accurately and when necessary, assist in feeding and drinking and making dietary decisions
- Achieving optimum mobility and physical comfort using all available equipment and manual handling techniques where appropriate
- Maintaining privacy and dignity
- Maintaining independence and identity
- Prevention of pressure area damage through good nursing care
- Contributing to effective palliative care
- Maintaining tidiness and cleanliness within the physical environment
2. Learn how to undertake tasks as detailed and prescribed in a service user’s care/support plan.
3. Develop skills in using innovative methods to support and encourage service users to participate in meaningful activities, new experiences and opportunities which will meet their individual needs (physical, emotional, social and spiritual) and promote good health.
4. Learn how to be responsible for providing physical and personal care to service users taking into account their basic and acute emotional needs.
5. Learn how to keep accurate, daily records as required (both electronically and manually).
6. Learn how care providers work in cooperation with members of multi-disciplinary health teams in order to maximise opportunities for service user therapeutic care.
7. Learn how to provide effective social care support to the people of Rochdale in line with the Care Act including:
- Developing a relationship with individuals and their families/circles of support
- Using a range of personalised and person-centred approaches to understand what people need
- Developing a support plan and carrying out a personalised review
- Exploring flexible and creative support opportunities within the local community
- Developing skills in researching information to provide advice, support and guidance
8. To adhere to all statutory requirements and good practices as laid down by all authorities involved.

- Support individuals they are working with according to their personal care/support plan
- Ask for help from an appropriate person when not confident or skilled in any aspect of their role
- Provide individuals with information to enable them to have a choice about the way they are supported
- Encourage individuals to participate in the way their care and support is delivered
- Ensure the individual knows what they are agreeing to regarding the way in which they are supported
- Contribute to the on-going development of care/support plans for the individual they support
- Support individuals with cognitive, physical or sensory impairments
- Ensure dignity is at the centre of all work with the individuals they support, their families, carers and advocates
- Demonstrate all work is person centred, accommodating the individual’s needs, wishes and preferences
- Demonstrate empathy (understanding and compassion) for individuals they support
- Demonstrate courage in supporting people in ways that may challenge their personal/cultural beliefs
- Speak clearly and exhibit positive non-verbal communication to individuals, families, carers and advocates
- Use the preferred methods of communication of the individual they support according to their language, culture, sensory needs and their wishes
- Identify and take steps to reduce environmental barriers to communication
- Demonstrate they can check for understanding
- Write clearly and concisely in records and reports
- Keep information safe and confidential according to agreed ways of working
- Recognise potential signs of different forms of abuse
- Respond to concerns of abuse according to agreed ways of working
- Recognise, report and challenge unsafe practices
- Promote the health and wellbeing of the individual they support
- Move people and objects safely
- Demonstrate how to reduce the spread of infection, including use of best practice in hand hygiene
- Demonstrate the promotion of healthy eating and wellbeing by ensuring individuals have access to fluids, food and nutrition
- Demonstrate how to keep people, buildings and themselves safe and secure
- Carry out fire safety procedures when required
- Use risk assessments to support individuals safely
- Recognise symptoms of cognitive impairment, e.g. Dementia, learning disabilities and mental health
- Monitor and report changes in health and wellbeing for individuals they support
- Reflect on your own work practices
- Demonstrate the development of their own skills and knowledge, including core skills in writing, numbers and information technology
- Demonstrate their contribution to their development plan
- Demonstrate ability to work in partnership with others to support the individual
- Identify sources of support when conflicts arise with other people or organisations
- Demonstrate they can work within safe, clear professional boundaries
- Show they can access and apply additional skills required to perform the specific job role competently
Your training plan
Adult Care Worker Level 2.
An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

GCSE in:
Maths and English (grade Grade 4/C or above)Let the company know about other relevant qualifications and industry experience you have. They can adjust the apprenticeship to reflect what you already know.

Apprentice rate: Apprentices who undertake Level 3 apprenticeships are paid a salary of 14,566.15 for 12 months and equivalent to Grade 1 SCP 2 currently £22,656 for the remaining months of the contract (18-month contract). Interview Date: 1st, 2nd and 3rd of July 2025. Induction date - Monday 8th September 2025.
