Summary

The team at Vac-Ex are looking for an enthusiastic Engineering Fitter Apprentice to join our experienced and friendly team. You will be supported through your qualification with real experience to complement your learning and work on a variety of machinery and equipment under the guidance of experienced fitters.

Wage

£15,704 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

The Fitter‘s job concerns plant and machinery installation, maintenance and repairs, replacement of broken or worn parts, adjustment, servicing and checking components, machinery and equipment, component replacement. You will develop skills in areas such as component assembly, tool use, and troubleshooting. 

General duties including:

  • Interpreting and following drawings/diagrams and/or specifications for required component or assembly 
  • Planning work activity, including resources, equipment and tooling
  • Producing individual components, for example, keys, pipework, threading, wiring looms, interfacing parts, motors, wiring cables
  • Re-furbishing components
  • Assembling components to produce equipment, machine or system - in full or part
  • Quality checking and adjusting components or assembly against required specification; for example testing and calibrating
  • Identifying and resolving problems with components or assembly; fault diagnosis
  • Handing over completed components or assembly, this may include storage and commissioning
  • Re-instating work area and equipment
  • Contributing to continuous improvement in component production or assembly

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
  • Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
  • Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
  • Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
  • Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
  • Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
  • Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
  • Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
  • Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
  • Reporting work outcomes or issues.
  • Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and house-keeping.
  • Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
  • Operating within limits of responsibility.
  • Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Your training plan

Training will be at Doncaster College where you will access a wide range of facilities on offer.  

Day release   

  • You will undertake the Engineering Fitter standard

You will undertake both on and off-the-job training by a team of industry qualified professionals to give you the best skills, knowledge and experience that will help you become a fitter of the future!

GCSE in:

Maths and English (grade 4/C)

You must be able to travel to and from work and college. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that's part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
