Summary

This is an additional role to support the team with systems and IT tasks. As an apprentice we will give you the skills and knowledge to commence a career in ICT.

Wage

£14,526.20 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Working under the direction of the ICT Support Technician:

  • Act as the initial point of contact to Advance Northumberland staff, including Advance Head Office and remote sites.
  • Support new user set up of equipment, including: laptops, telephones, mobile phones and tablets.
  • Support the installation and maintenance of network equipment, including patching, Wi-Fi access points, switches and routers.
  • Support the installation of new software and updates to existing software.
  • Support administration and updates to the Active Directory and user accounts.
  • Support first line troubleshooting and ensure proper escalations through Advance Northumberland Helpdesk, and use of the Northumberland County Council (NCC) Service Level Agreement.
  • Support departmental administration and maintenance of all records, including purchase orders, invoices, internal documentation and disaster recover records. 
  • Support Advance Northumberland to maintain high quality, reliable and secure ICT services to the business. 
  • Work to and positively promote all Advance Northumberland ICT and Information Security policies.

What you'll learn

Course contents
  • Interpret and prioritise internal or external customer's requirements in line with organisation's policy
  • Apply the appropriate tools and techniques to undertake fault finding and rectification

  • Communicate with all levels of stakeholders, keeping them informed of progress and managing escalation where appropriate

  • Manage and prioritise the allocated workload effectively making best use of time and resources

  • Test and evaluate the system's performance and compliance with customer requirements.
  • Escalate non routine problems in line with procedures
  • Use basic scripting to execute the relevant tasks for example PowerShell, Linux
  • Carry out routine maintenance across systems, (such as IT, Communications), ensuring organisational compliance at all times
  • Apply the necessary security, in line with access and/or encryption requirements
  • Use a range of Cabling or Connectors equipment in line with technical requirements for example physically or remotely
  • Test and evaluate network environments
  • Monitor performance and usage of a network
  • Deploy applications on a network
  • Set up storage and data access for staff
  • Apply necessary security measures, in line with access requirements to a network
  • Carry out routine maintenance across network systems, ensuring organisational compliance
  • Monitor network-related workloads including DNS and firewalls
  • Install or undertake basic upgrades, either physically or remotely
  • Establish digital communication or telecommunications systems through, for example cabling and connecting equipment.
  • Identify a range of tools and or diagnostic equipment, for example, Hardware or Software components, to resolve Communications or Telecommunications requirements.
  • Undertake basic telecommunications activities, in response to an allocated task, designated responsibilities, instructions or customer’s requirements.

You will: • Have knowledge/understanding of Microsoft packages and be able to learn new systems. • Demonstratable desire to pursue a career in ICT. • Good communications skills, written and verbal. • The ability to work independently and take initiative and as part of a team • Ability to learn to be an effective communicator both written and verbal. It would be good but not essential if you also have: • Training or qualifications in ICT. • Full UK driving licence or working towards one
