Summary
The Apprentice Governance Officer will support strong governance across the charity’s schools. Working with the Director of Governance and team, they’ll gain hands-on experience in governance, compliance, and board administration, building skills for a career in education, charity, or public sector governance.

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you'll do at work
- Assist in the preparation and distribution of agendas, papers, and minutes for governing body, trust board, and committee meetings
- Attend governance meetings (virtually or in person) to take minutes and support meeting logistics
- Maintain records of attendance, declarations of interest, and statutory documentation
- Support the annual cycle of meetings, reviews, and compliance checks
- Help monitor statutory and regulatory compliance, ensuring records and policies are up to date across the trust/school network
- Assist in the administration of the policy review schedule and help circulate updated policies as required
- Support in compiling governance reports and returns to the Department for Education, Companies House, and the Charity Commission
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of trustees, governors, and members
- Help with onboarding new trustees/governors, including DBS checks, induction packs, and training coordination
- Track and record mandatory training, declarations, and conflict of interest disclosures
- Act as a first point of contact for governance-related queries from school staff, governors, and external stakeholders
- Responding to emails and using the phone
- Support internal communication relating to governance updates and developments
- Managed diary and organised ad hoc meetings
- Supporting team members as necessary
- Undertake a Level 4 governance-related apprenticeship qualification
- Participate in internal training and learning opportunities, including shadowing experienced governance professionals
- Keep up to date with relevant changes in education policy, academy trust governance, and charity law

- Interpret regulation, legislation and governance practices and advise and train stakeholders on its practical application.
- Establish, maintain, and influence relationships with key stakeholders and team members.
- Use IT systems to manage, share and store information in accordance with regulatory requirements and organisational policies and procedures.
- Communicate complex information through a variety of media to enable key stakeholders to understand what is required.
- Review instructions, following them to a conclusion through the execution of tasks.
- Identify and use precedents adapted for specific circumstances such as resolutions, announcements, reports.
- Produce work which is factually accurate and well presented for submission to the members of a decision-making governing body and for publication by the organisation.
- Develop and maintain structure charts for the organisation.
- Plan and prioritise their workload to meet deadlines.
- Maintain and organise forward looking plans and calendars, keeping relevant stakeholders informed of upcoming events such as meetings, reporting timetables, compliance deadlines.
- Gather, analyse, use, and share data to inform the decision-making process and make judgements on actions to take.
- Identify problems and present potential solutions to stakeholders.
- Respond to stakeholder questions and requests, knowing when to consult with others or escalate on matters of a more complex or sensitive nature.

- Each apprentice will have their own dedicated tutor who will conduct monthly remote tutorials and reviews, providing continuous support throughout the apprenticeship program
