Support the Toolroom function. Perform tasks on or around a Die Casting Machine whilst following all safety procedures. Support the Foundry Production Process.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

This is a 4 year apprenticeship resulting in a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing & Engineering. The first year will be spent at Midland Group Training Services (MGTS) in Redditch learning core practical and theoretical elements of the role. For the following years, apprentices will attend MGTS on a day release basis to complete the necessary educational requirements for the programme.

Responsibilities and Duties will Include:

  • Support foundry production, manufacturing cells in any capacity, carrying out repairs and maintenance to Dies and Shear Tools on and off the machines.
  • Assist in ensuring that maximum production activities take place and plan out other work schedule left by Toolroom Manager.
  • Taking apart and inspection of open and shut dies.
  • Taking apart and inspection of dies with sliding hydraulic / manual cores.
  • Welding and reforming breakout by hand.
  • Manufacturing jigs and fixtures.
  • Taking apart and inspection of shear tools.
  • Manufacturing punches and core pins from drawings.
  • Assembly of shot stems and tips.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic cylinders and the ability to re-seal and check safely.
  • Removal of solder from dies on DCM
  • Welding repairs on die breakout inside DCM.
  • Changing broken core pins on the die casting machine.
  • Changing broken shear tool punches on the DCM.
  • Reinserting cavities and slide cores into bolsters.
  • Fitting new inserts, spreaders and bushes.
  • Testing water cooling channels and hydraulics on die casting tools.
  • Assist in tooling preventative maintenance and improvement activities

After this apprenticeship
