Summary

What you'll do at work
The Community Activator Apprentice with Swimming specialism has an important role to play in improving the health and wellbeing of children, families and communities by supporting the delivery of fun, inclusive and engaging sessions using our swimming pools. Working alongside our SwimED swim teachers, this apprenticeship will give you an introduction into the world of swim teaching and also wider sports coaching delivery.
Along the apprenticeship journey, you will learn how to plan, deliver and review sessions. We will fund your swim teacher qualification. You will get a diverse opportunity to develop your wider coaching skills during your work on our Active Holiday camps during school holidays and also via our wraparound care provision.
Key aspects of the role include:
- Working directly with pupils across key stages 1 and 2
- Support the delivery of swimming across National Curriculum PE lessons
- Support extracurricular activities
- Undertaking routine maintenance of equipment, water testing and maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the pool environment
- Delivery of a range of interventions to support targeted pupil learning
- Run/organise sports competitions/events
- Use of technology to engage pupils with physical activity and sports especially swimming
- Supporting holiday camp programmes and other wraparound care/extracurricular activities (where necessary)
- Support other projects and activities relating to participation in sport and physical activity

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Planning and adapting sessions and activities that respond to customer feedback and encourage customers to develop a lifelong activity habit.
- Coaching or leading pre-planned sport or physical activity sessions that are attractive to the target audience(s) and develop motivational relationships with customers.
- Promoting a physical activity offer, (including but not exclusively) organised play and sport in the community which supports individuals on their behaviour change journey.
- Working collaboratively with sports clubs and other community assets – including volunteers, public services, youth workers, the police and community champions.
- Supporting customers to co-produce rewarding volunteering opportunities.
- Supporting families to participate together in sport and physical activity.
- Working effectively with customer insight to overcome individual, community and societal barriers to participation in physical activity and sport.
- Contributing to the employer’s design of activities and services and practising the employer’s organisation’s values, policies and procedures.
- Contributing to teams that deliver community events and festivals.
- Supporting organisations to evaluate, develop and promote sessions and other opportunities such as outdoor group exercise and informal social play.
- Maintaining personal safety and wellbeing, as well as that of customers.
- Managing disruptive behaviours from individuals within the group setting.
- Encouraging customers to be regularly active – both formally and informally – within sports clubs or leisure facilities including open-space.
- Effectively using social media and technology, appropriately, to deliver targeted messages to identified customer groups for example children, teenagers, adults and older adults.
- Effectively monitor and evaluate activities, sessions and projects using technology platforms to maintain accurate records and produce timely reports.
Your training plan
Our apprentices will receive weekly off-the-job training hours in order to engage with masterclasses, skills festival days, assignments and tasks related to the apprenticeship, online CPD courses and development sessions with their allocated skills coach.
They will achieve the Level 2 Community Activator Coach Apprenticeship Standard with Swimming Specialism alongside sector specific CPD, such as:
- STA Level 2 Swim Teacher qualification
- Pool maintenance and water testing CPD
- Supporting the PE curriculum (swimming focussed)
- Behaviour Management
- Safeguarding / Prevent
- Mental Health and Wellbeing
- Digital skills
- Functional skills in Maths and English (where required)

Other requirements
We have vacancies available across all of our Swim Ed: sites. The locations include : Leicester and Leicestershire, Corby, Kettering, Rothwell, Northampton, Peterborough. Applicants must be confident and happy to travel to and from various school locations each day. Please only apply for this apprenticeship if the location(s) suits your mode of transport and travel times etc. The Swim Ed: programme operates for a six-week period at one site, the site will then change within the geographical area. The ability to travel between school sites is essential. Apprentices will ideally have a full driving license and access to their own transport. All applicants will need to demonstrate they can pass an NPLQ swim test which will include the ability to jump/dive into deep water, swim 50 metres in less than 60 seconds, swim 100 metres continuously on front and back in deep water.
