Summary

We are seeking self-motivated individuals with a strong interest in audio and video technology and excellent customer service skills to join our dedicated AV team. Your role will be to deliver a world-class user experience for staff, students, and visitors through in-person support, telephone calls, email, and Microsoft Teams.

Working an 8-hour day between 8:00am and 6:00pm on a rota basis, and beyond these hours on an overtime basis (including weekends) when required, especially during busy periods such as start of term and to support university events such as Open Days. Working days TBC

Work

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work

You will support lecture theatres, meeting rooms, classrooms, and event spaces, assisting with technology such as Extron control systems, PCs, projectors, visualisers, and lecture capture. You will also use remote tools to monitor and assist users, troubleshoot technical issues as they arise, and participate in problem-solving. Additionally, you may be involved in upgrading in-room equipment, testing new technology, and working with audio and video production and live event streaming.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting teaching, events, and meetings
  • Maintaining a wide range of AV and IT technology and services
  • Managing support tickets and bookings within applicable SLAs
  • Participating in the continual service improvement process
  • Contributing to our knowledge base and documentation as required, adhering to University IT Security policy
  • Serving as an ambassador by providing advice and knowledge where appropriate

Course contents
  • Operate a video camera and vision mixer
  • Integrate a projector and/or display as part of an audiovisual presentation
  • Audio mixing; loudness, timbre, spatialisation, and channel management
  • Apply and problem solve video signal flow for live production
  • Operate and program lighting control software/hardware
  • Root cause analysis & problem solving
  • Collate, compare, and synthesise information from various sources
  • Work collaboratively; Building and maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders (such as performers, public speakers, presenters, clients and event organisers)
  • Communicate technical concepts with clarity in person and in writing to end users of all skill levels and seniority
  • Install, test, and commission relevant hardware
  • Configure and manage remote participation systems
  • Edit audio and video content
  • Prepare, maintain, and manipulate audio and video assets through post-production
  • Create digital assets for video workflows
  • Manual camera operating for a range of contemporary S35mm digital cameras
  • Audio capture
  • Deliver virtual event technical operations
  • Clearly advise and guide event participants
  • Devise a learning program intended to cover a particular device/system
  • Identify personal training and professional development needs via research and investigation

  • Accurately assesses level of risk to health and safety of themselves and others
  • Test and maintain audiovisual equipment, cables, and connectors: substitute items where necessary

  • Create a coherent planning document

Requirements

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • Maths and English (grade 4)
  • Any Subject (grade Pass)

- Driving license is desirable but not essential - You MUST be able to travel between Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway campuses.
