The Apprentice will work towards the Level 2 or 3 qualification in Professional Cookery.

The duties will include:

  • Washing up cleaning cooking and prepping
  • Cooking steaks, starters, chilli and curry for example
  • Preparing desserts such as cheesecake from scratch
  • Carvery on Sundays
  • Providing input to the head chef regarding menus

  • Someone who can take instruction with excellent listening skills
  • Excellent timekeeping and attendance
  • Ability to work within a team, but has the initiative to work unsupervised
  • Ability to work under pressure in a busy kitchen environment.

Personal qualities

The role will appeal to someone who is extremely creative and passionate about working in hospitality. The successful apprentice will have high levels of personal hygiene, be extremely reliable.

Qualifications required

Good understanding of numeracy and literacy.

GCSE qualifications at grade C or above in English and maths or the ability to work towards Level 2 Functional Skills.

Future prospects

Further training and/or full time employment will be on the table for the right candidate based on performance during the Apprenticeship.

Things to consider

Due to the nature of the role, the Apprentice will be required to work a variety of shift patterns to include evening, weekends, and bank holidays.

About the employer

The Black Horse is very much the village local although the quality of its Sunday carvery brings in customers from further afield. Part of the reason for this may well be that the owner used to be a butcher! Mainly Georgian from the outside, there are earlier 17th century features inside.

The impressive huge stone fireplace, bedecked with horse brasses, is a more modern addition. The lounge is carpeted and the furniture is comfortable, so it's an easy place in which to linger.

The pub teams use the separate public bar for their dominoes and pool matches, and all those diners fill the 70 seater restaurant on Sundays! In summer, Monday and Tuesday opening hours are exchanged; also opening hours for both bar and food may be extended so it's worth checking in advance.

Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage (ANMW): The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is £3.30 per hour (From October 1st 2016 this will be increasing by 3% to £3.40 per hour). This is the legal minimum pay per hour applying to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their apprenticeship. For apprentices 19 or over who have completed their first year and are continuing their apprenticeship, the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies.
