Role and Responsibilities

  • To assist the Catering Manager and Cooks to prepare food as well as cook fresh food from scratch
  • Must ensure a high level of hygiene at all times
  • Maintain and keep the kitchen clean & tidy
  • Washing and drying kitchen utensils/pots and ensuring their proper storage
  • To learn all aspects of kitchen work
  • To serve on the counter and assist in the dining hall

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • You must have a passion for cooking and be creative
  • Must be willing to learn in what can often be a pressurised kitchen

Personal qualities

  • You must be reliable and definitely a good timekeeper
  • You must have enthusiasm, and be a team player
  • Must be fit and healthy and of smart appearance (a uniform will be supplied)

Qualifications required

A good level of literacy and numeracy.

Level 1 or 2 catering qualification would be useful, but not essential

A Food Hygiene qualification would also be preferred, but not essential

An enhanced DBS is required for the successful candidate (paid for by school)

Future prospects

A permanent job may be available so subject to a successful apprenticeship you may be employed by the school.

Training provider

Intermediate Level 2 in Food Production & Cooking plus Functional Skills if required.
This is a work based qualification so it will not be necessary for you to come to college, instead an assessor will come to you in the work place to deliver the training. You may only need to attend college for Functional Skills if required. If you are in the middle of exams the start date could be flexible

From the 1st October 2015 the NMW for apprentices is £3.30. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.

£3.56 per hr, month 1-4 £106.80 p/w
£4.12 per hr, month 5-8 £123.60 p/w
£4.69 per hr, month 9-12 £140.70 p/w

Term time only plus 2 training days.
