    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The successful candidate will:
  • Greet clients
  • Serve refreshments
  • Assist stylists and
  • Shampoo client's hair
  • Work on reception
  • Help keep the salon tidy
Candidate's will also work towards an NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing.

  • They will be self motivated and will to learn.

No previous qualifications are necessary for this role.

Future prospects

The successful candidate has the opportunity to go onto an Advanced Apprenticeship and to become a stylist in the salon. They will also have the opportunity to attend training classes with L'Oreal, Schwarzkopf, Wella and Sassoon.

Things to consider

The role will include one late night a week as well as working Saturdays. Hairdressing is a physically demanding job and you will be on your feet for a long time each day, hairdressing requires some understanding of human biology and chemistry, and this will be taught during your apprenticeship. Hairdressing is heavily customer focused and you will be constantly interacting with people.

Training provider

Apprentices will attend college once a month, where all theory work will be provided. Practical training will be provided in the salon. Apprentices will work towards an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Hairdressing, which includes a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing and Functional Skills in English and Mathematics.

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.30 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
