Job Purpose
To undertake support duties and assist group leaders in the day to day needs of the members in their care, to support tutors to deliver courses and respond to members’ needs.
Members may have a learning disability and/or a physical disability, and may also present with emotional difficulties, behavioural problems, and/or mental health issues. This will require the assistant support worker to be patient, understanding, empathic, and to work with an approach which puts the member at the centre of the support.

Key tasks/ Job Responsibilities

  • Provide members with the level and type of support specified by group leaders and managers, whilst at the same time encouraging them towards independence and accepting responsibility for their own behaviour
  • Establish a good relationship with members by using language and other communication skills that the members can understand and relate to and encouraging them to interact appropriately with others
  • To support the activities of individual members and small groups under the direction of the group leader
  • Promote positive behaviour of members in line with organisational policies and group ground rules by the use of praise and encouragement, collaborating with group leaders where risks such as challenging behaviours occur.
  • Support members to access any venue and its facilities in a safe manner and where appropriate ensure transport is available to return home.
  • To liaise regularly with colleagues and managers and/or take part in meetings as required in order to promote safe and effective support & learning
  • To assist in the recruiting, planning and recording of support, care and activities as required by group leaders and managers
  • To take part in development activities offered by People Matters to further knowledge
  • To abide by all the policies within People Matters e.g. Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity and Data Protection

Qualifications required


  • At least 3 GCSE grades c or above in Maths and English (or equivalent) will be desirable.
  • Acceptance is subject to college interview, initial assessment and taking a skill area test.

Future prospects

Full time employment on completion of the apprenticeship with the opportunity to further their skills and qualifications onto the Advanced Health and Social care Apprenticeship.

The successful candidate will need to be checked under the new DBS

Working Days: Monday to Friday, hours can be negotiated once started

  • Level 2 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care (QCF)

Other information

The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.30 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
