Lodgeworthy Farm is currently looking for an Apprentice to join their Dairy farm. They have 280 milking cows and a Westfalia milking parlor. They also block calve (roughly 280 but are looking at 300). The owner of the farm is very keen to teach and support the apprentice by passing on his skills and experience in his much loved trade. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from a real professional who is passionate about his industry.

You will be involved in the following tasks:

  • Milking
  • Yard scrapping
  • Animal welfare and health
  • Bedding up & mucking out
  • Livestock movement
  • Feeding
  • General farmyard maintenance – fencing, ground maintenance etc
  • Tractor driving.

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • The farmer is looking for someone who can demonstrate good practical skills or knowledge of farming already. 
  • He is looking for someone who is keen to work in the dairy industry and willing to work the hours to learn.

Candidates must be able to:

  • Be reliable,
  • Punctual,
  • Hardworking,
  • Dependable,
  • Able to work alone without assistance when needed.

Qualifications required

2 GCSEs in Math and English or equivalent is essential.

Future prospects

An employment opportunity may be available at the end of the apprenticeship but this is not guaranteed.

Things to consider

  • You will be working in all weathers, wet, cold, snow and hot so must be robust enough to deal with what the elements throw at you.
  • As you will be working with large livestock you will need to be confident around large animals.
  • As with all farm work you will be expected to participate in heavy manual tasks, therefore need to have a good degree of fitness.

Other information

You will work 40 hours per week, between the hours of 5 am and 6.30/7 pm. Every other weekend will be a 5 am start, split shift and then back in the afternoon. Depending on where the successful candidate lives.

From 1st of October 2015 the National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £3.30 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the national Minimum Wage appropriate to their age applies. The minimum wage for apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
