    Wages explained

    The current National Minimum Wage for an apprentice is £3.50 an hour. This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
    Apprentices must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for their age if they are aged 19 or over and have completed their first year.
    The minimum wage rates are £5.60 an hour for 18-20 year olds and £7.05 for anyone aged 21 and over.
    Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that’s part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

This is a great opportunity to work in a busy friendly and expanding business. The chosen individual will be involved in the production of swimwear and safety clothing for both the engineering and construction sectors plus various types of office and retail wear.

Tasks will include embroidery, walking foot machines, using sewing, button-hole and heat sealing machines, cutting fabrics, packing and general production work. The apprentice will need to watch and learn from other experienced staff and demonstrate an ability to produce quality items at all times. Due to the changing priorities of the business and demands from clients the apprentice will also need to assist in other areas of the business as and when required.Following strict patterns and designs is part of the role as well being able to build up speed and efficiency in their work.

There may be times when the chosen candidate is asked to work extra hours to help fulfill orders from customers. There is plenty of scope for further development within the role and the business encourages feedback and involvement from its staff for the future of the firm.

The successful candidate will need to be motivated, enthusiastic and interested in fashion and textiles. You should enjoy hands on work, have a good sense of humour and friendly personality. In addition, you must be a good team player and have a willingness to learn. You must have a flexible and adaptable approach.

On completion of your level 2 qualification in performing manufacturing operations you will have the opportunity to secure long term employment.

About the employer

Safety First Manufacturing has been established since 1981 producing a wide range of safety clothing and equipment for the construction industry plus other sectors. The firm was originally based at Lee Mill but due to expansion has moved to premises in Newnham Industrial Estate in Plympton, Plymouth.

The business is continuing to grow and has moved to into other clothing areas such as swim-wear and office wear. They also produce welding curtains and the frames to go with these plus other bespoke products for the engineering sector.

Training provider

The Level 2 Apprenticeship in Performing Manufacturing Operations consists of:

  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Performing Manufacturing Operations
  • Level 2 Diploma in Industrial Environment Awareness
  • Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT (Level 1)
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health & Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

Attendance will be required at our training centre for one day a week. All other aspects of the qualification will be delivered on site by the employer, where you will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated assessor who will monitor your progress during your training.

Whilst at the Skills Group training centre, you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you throughout your role. Part of your training will be knowledge and theory based, whilst the rest will be practical.

From October 1st 2015 the National Minimum Wage (NMW) for Apprentices is £3.30 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the National Minimum Wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent training.
