Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic Community Engagement Apprentice to join our vibrant and friendly team. You will work across our outreach and youth departments, supported through your qualification with hands-on experience in events, cycling activities, and project planning - a unique opportunity to grow, learn, and make a real impact locally.

Wage

£11,778 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

You will be actively involved in the day-to-day running of our cycling and community outreach programmes. Each week will bring a mix of exciting activities, working across parks, schools, and local events. Tasks may include:

  • Supporting the delivery of youth cycling sessions, group rides, and events like Bike Olympics and Learn to Fix workshops
  • Helping plan and promote activities through social media, flyers, and community outreach
  • Assisting with funding applications, event logistics, and collecting feedback and monitoring data for reports
  • Working alongside Bicycle Mentors and Directors to engage the community and develop new ideas
  • Attending schools, parks, and community venues to support inclusive, accessible cycling activities for all ages

  • Promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and physical activity for individuals and communities.
  • Encourage individuals' participation, motivation and to change their behaviour towards sport or physical activity.
  • Contribute to inclusive, safe and effective sessions.
  • Plan, follow, adapt, and deliver session plans, based on participant needs and feedback.
  • Use coaching styles for sport or physical activity sessions meeting the participants needs and motivations.
  • Promote the benefits of a lifelong activity habit.
  • Use techniques to build rapport with participants.
  • Carry out the tasks required before, during and after a community activity.
  • Support participants to overcome personal or societal barriers.
  • Manage individuals' behaviours within a group setting.
  • Work collaboratively with services and other community organisations to run events that make the best use resources.
  • Record and store data and information, in line with legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
  • Use suitable digital technology to deliver targeted messages to participant groups.
  • Adapt communication methods to meet the needs of participants and groups.
  • Identify and respond to safeguarding concerns within own scope of role and in line with organisational protocols.
  • Support equity, diversity and inclusion in line with legislation and organisational policies.
  • Support the mental health and wellbeing of self and participants.
  • Comply with health and safety legislation, regulations, risk assessment procedures, guidelines and procedures.
  • Participate in personal and professional development.
  • Maintain professional boundaries within scope of own role.

Training schedule

Training will be at Doncaster College where you will access a wide range of facilities on offer. 

Day release. 

You will undertake the Level 2 Community activator coach standard.

You will undertake Functional Skills for English and/or Maths if needed.   

You will undertake both on and off-the-job training by a team of industry qualified professionals to give you the best skills, knowledge and experience that will help you become a Community Activator Coach of the future!

Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

  • English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)

Other requirements

Please note this apprenticeship entails working at various locations in Doncaster and the surrounding areas. The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in cycling and wellbeing, and supporting local community engagement. You must be able to travel to and from work and college. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that's part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
