Dearneside Fabrications Limited are looking for an Apprentice Plater Welder to complete a Level 3 Metal Fabricator apprenticeship and join their team.

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

Role & responsibilities:

  • To take drawings and then set out and fabricate from mild or stainless steel parts by welding or bolting together to a required fabrication standard
  • Welding in both mild and stainless steel, balustrades, staircases, balconies, gates and juliets
  • Carry out fabrication of certain items and remedial welding and dressing as and when required
  • Following our weld procedures and ensuring the welding requirements on the drawings are met
  • Inspecting welds after the work is completed to ensure that they are correct and comply with our procedures
  • Ensuring their equipment is working correctly, that it is fit and safe to use
  • To be conversant in the H&S requirements and abide by these rules

The fabrication is a noisy environment; PPE is worn all day and overhead cranes are in operation. The welding department is very busy.

Quality of workmanship is high and all operatives are responsible for the quality of work they output and to weld to a coded standard in both MIG and TIG.

What you'll learn

  • Work safely at all times, comply with health & safety legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Comply with environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Obtain, check and use the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation).
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity.
  • Undertake the work activity using the correct processes, procedures and equipment.
  • Carry out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing) using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment.
  • Deal promptly and effectively with problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel.
  • Complete any required documentation using the defined recording systems at the appropriate stages of the work activity.
  • Restore the work area on completion of the activity and where applicable return any resources and consumables to the appropriate location.
  • Identify and follow correct Metal work instructions, specifications, drawing etc.
  • Mark out using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Cut and form Metal for the production or maintenance of fabricated products.
  • Produce and assemble Metal products to required specification and quality requirements.

  • Set up, check, adjust and use joining and related equipment.

Your training plan

You will study on a Level 3 Metal Fabricator Apprenticeship:

  • On completion of this, you will gain a qualification in Engineering at Level 3 standard
  • During the first year of the apprenticeship, your learning will take place at the University of Sheffield’s AMRC Training Centre based at Catcliffe, Rotherham, for an initial block of study on a full-time basis
  • After this, you will attend the training centre for one day a week for knowledge study

Essential qualifications

GCSE or equivalent in:

  • English Language (grade Grade C or 4)
  • Mathematics (grade Grade C or 4)
