What you will do in your working day

Harlescott Junior School is part of Haughmond Schools which includes  Sundorne Infant & Nursery School. Both schools are on the same site. As of April 2024, Haughmond Schools have joined Severn Bridges Multi Academy Trust which includes 3 primary schools in Shrewsbury.

The apprentice will have a robust induction process which includes safeguarding, confidentiality and health and safety.

As well as in house training the apprentice will have 20% off the job learning which will be timetabled into their working week.

Haughmond Schools has a good record for employing apprentices that become long serving members of staff and stay with the schools and continue their training further.

The apprentice will be working in an environment which will allow them to learn the following skills.

Support for pupils

  • Attend to pupils’ personal needs, and implement related personal programmes, including social, health, physical, hygiene, first aid, and welfare matters.  
  • Supervise and support pupils, ensuring their safety and access to learning.  
  • Establish constructive relationships with pupils and interact with them according to individual needs. 
  • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.  
  • Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher.  
  • Encourage pupils to act independently as appropriate.  

2. Support for the teacher:

  • Prepare the classroom as directed for lessons and clear afterwards. Assist with the display of pupil’s work.
  • Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of routine equipment / materials as set out in instructions.  
  • Be aware of pupil problems / progress / achievements, and report to the teacher as agreed.  
  • Undertake pupil record keeping as directed.  
  • Support the teacher in managing pupil behaviour, reporting difficulties as appropriate.  
  • Provide routine clerical tasks e.g. photocopying, typing, filing, collecting money etc.

Support for the curriculum:

  • Support pupils in understanding instructions.  
  • Support pupils in respect of local and national learning strategies e.g. literacy, numeracy, early years etc. as directed by the teachers.  
  • Support pupils in using basic ICT as directed.  
  • Prepare and maintain equipment / resources as directed by the teacher and assist pupils in their use.  
  • Monitor and arrange the orderly and secure storage of stock and supplies.

The training you will be getting

You will work towards gaining the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to achieve the Level 3 Teaching Assistant apprenticeship standard;

Teaching assistant / Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education

You will be required to attend college day release, one in every 3 weeks on the London Rd Campus with the remainder of the working week in the workplace.

About the employer

Harlescott Junior School shares a site with Sundorne Infant School and Nursery. The school has recently had a lot of new building work and has lots of space so will be increasing the number of pupils in the nursery and school over the next few years. The school has recently joined Severn Bridges MAT. The MAT is made up of 5 schools including Sundorne. All of the schools are primary and based in Shrewsbury. The MATs vision is to develop a supportive learning environment, where children achieve the best they can academically and grow up to become well rounded individuals equipped for life.
