What you will do in your working day

The following list of duties is indicative of the nature of the post.  Priorities, time-scales and standards will be set in agreement with management, recognising the level of competence of the post-holder.  The tasks are either to be carried out fully and directly by the postholder, or through assisting other members of the Estates Department Project Team:

  • To assist in undertaking building surveys, including the identification of building defects and proposal for repair, leading onto self-diagnosis of defects once a demonstration of ability has been tested and provided.
  • Provide technical advice on the maintenance of buildings including the Inn’s Grade 1 and Grade 2* listed buildings.
  • Be responsible for assisting with the preparation of information for the submitting of planning applications and advising on property legislation and building regulations.
  • To assist Head of Projects in the preparation of detailed delivery programmes and specification of works for the development, refurbishment and maintenance of the estate and undertaking project management of minor works as directed.
  • To manage small projects from inception to completion, rectification period and feedback, including preparation of AutoCAD drawings and tender documents, overseeing the tender process, preparing tender analysis and Committee reports, following suitable training carrying out the functions of Contract Administrator and CDM Principal Designer for smaller/simpler projects, and to provide technical assistance on larger, more complex jobs.
  • The post holder will have the opportunity to take a lead Project Management / Contractor Administrator role on projects up to the value of £50,000 and will assist on projects of greater value where they have deemed sufficient experience in due course.
  • To assist in the management of specialists and consultants where necessary for the implementation of the Inn’s building programmes, negotiate fees, co-ordinate development plans and negotiate and agree final accounts.
  • To assist in the preparation of the annual budget for the development, refurbishment and maintenance of the estate and to ensure that spending is within budget and work completed to agreed standards.
  • Assessing existing access points to buildings and where practicable recommending modifications in order to meet the needs of people with disabilities.
  • Ensure compliance with health & safety and other statutory requirements; identifying and reducing risks where practicable and implementing risk management requirements of insurers to the Inn’s health and safety advisers.
  • Check, monitor and code invoices for purchases and contracts.
  • Providing estates services and administration as directed by the Director of Estates, Head of Projects and Building Surveyor, particularly (but not exclusively) when holiday and/or sickness cover is required.
  • To undertake other duties commensurate with the post-holder’s level of skill and experience, at the discretion of the Inn.

The training you will be getting

The apprentice will be undertaking the following training and obtain the following qualifications:

  • BSc (Hons) Building Surveying
  • The training for this apprenticeship will be in-person at London South Bank University, Southwark Campus. The training will be delivered on a day-release delivery model (1-day per-week).
  • Attending regular on site training, which will include working at height, through the use of an access harness to undertake roof inspection at high level using the safety system in place, asbestos awareness training, dignity and respect training, plus other training courses deemed relevant to the position.
  • Chartered professional registration with RICS (MRICS)

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

On successful completion of the EPA (End Point Assessment) you will qualify as a Chartered Building Surveyor (MRICS) with the intention of a full-time role available after completion of the apprenticeship.

You will receive support from the Building Surveying team with on-the-job training and preparation of EPA (End Point Assessment) material required to sit your final assessment, which is the RICS APC (Assessment of Professional Competence). Your training and tuition fees will be paid for you. However, you will have to cover your living expenses because these are not eligible for student loans under the apprenticeship scheme. About the employer

To become and practise as a barrister, it is necessary to belong to one of the Inns of Court. There are four Inns; whose origins date back to the 14th century. The purpose of the Inns are is to provide collegiate activities and support for student barristers and barristers, Lincoln’s Inn has an extensive estate of 11 acres comprising, (a) 44 properties which are let out to barristers and residential tenants, (b) The Great Hall, Old Hall, Bench Rooms, Chapel, Treasury office and Library, The buildings built at various dates between 1470 and 2019.
