What you will do in your working day

Work typically involves shaping and cutting materials, installing finished materials like partitions, doors, staircases, window frames, mouldings, timber floors, and erecting structural components such as floor joists and roofs. They will prepare and fix building components from the construction of new buildings through to the installation or fixtures and fittings, they might also carry out a wide range of repair jobs.

Apprentices will need: 

  • A strong commitment to reliability and punctuality
  • Keen attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Eager to seek feedback and learn from experienced professionals
  • No prior experience is necessary, but a willingness to learn is essential

The training you will be getting

Duration:

• 18 months practical training period, plus 3 months for End Point Assessment

Delivery model:

• Work-based training with your employer
• Day release during term time (approximately 1 day per week for 18 months)
• Approximately 5 on-site assessment visits per year
• Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths and English (7 days at college for each, if required)
• Off the job training will count for at least 6 hours a week of an apprentice’s time at work

• Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths
• Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship

End Point Assessment:

• Multiple choice knowledge test
• Practical test
• Professional discussion based on a portfolio of evidence
