What will the apprentice be doing?
- Perform a range of technical duties, guided by procedures involving autonomous work on both general and complex medical equipment in the clinical and workshop environment to ensure the optimum effectiveness, reliability, availability, and safety of medical devices
- To assist commission, calibrate, deploy and maintain a wide range of complex medical devices e.g. Infusion Devices, Patient Monitoring, Defibrillators, etc.
- Using primarily computerised systems, make accurate equipment maintenance history records and other information supporting audit, quality and performance monitoring
- Ensure all duties are delivered in an efficient, safe, professional and organised way according to section policies, procedures and Health and Safety documentation
- Ensure all medical devices are ready for deployment from the Medical Equipment Library
- Liaise with medical device suppliers to obtain technical and commercial information in relation to equipment maintenance and evaluation
- Monitor stocks and initiate orders to ensure the timely and adequate procurement of medical device parts and accessories to maintain devices in a serviceable condition
- Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job, participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff development and training
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
- The role is to participate in a 3-year level 3 Healthcare Science (HCS) Apprenticeship training programme specialising in medical engineering
- Apprentices will undertake the Level 3 Healthcare engineering specialist technician - Healthcare medical devices technician standard through Dudley College
- Training will be blended through a combination of remote learning and block study placements at Dudley College campus
- The postholder will undertake formal training where they will learn and develop skills and knowledge relating to the installation, maintenance, repair, and management of medical equipment
- The post holder will work both in workshops and in clinical areas, supervised by colleagues, carrying out technical activities on a wide range of medical equipment within the electrical / electronic field
- The Post Holder will be required to work on rotation at Basildon, Southend, Broomfield Hospitals and on occasion other external organisations
