What will the apprentice be doing?

  • To learn the theoretical and practical skills to weld on Aluminium and Stainless Steel, working to stringent regulatory standards and quality levels
  •  set up and tack weld
  •  full welding of seams and joints
  •  learning to read engineering drawings including welding symbols and associated specifications
  • gaining experience and understanding with different materials, their properties and applications
  • operating Robotic Welding equipment
  • working with comprehensive Health & Safety practices

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

Qualifications included:

  • Metal Fabricator Apprenticeship Standard. Company Training Plan & Assessment
  • Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering -
  • Development Knowledge (1 day per week for 2 years at college)
  • Development Competence Qualification (workplace)
  • Level 2 Functional Skills - Maths (If required)
  • Level 2 Functional Skills - English (If required)
  • End Point Assessment at the end of the apprenticeship

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

  • The priority is to become a high quality TIG welder, demonstrating commitment, flexibility and a strong work ethic
  • Opportunities are then available through initiative and additional study to gain further qualifications and we have supported individuals from Production to move into roles within Engineering, Health & Safety, Production Management and Quality

Things to consider

Welding is a job that can be lonely, with long hours spent inside a welding helmet. It can be hot, it can be uncomfortable and it can be frustrating. However, it is also very satisfying with a clear sense of achievement and output. Good welders take a lot of pride in their skills and abilities. Once experienced and productive you will form part of a shift team.
