What will the apprentice be doing?

  • To aid in the calibration and radiation tests at pre-determined
    intervals of equipment identified by the Radiotherapy Physics
    Quality Assurance schedule in accordance with departmental
    procedures
  • To support the design and fabrication of customised
    Radiotherapy and Physics aids adhering to all procedures and
    health and safety protocols
  • To aid in the technical support of the radiotherapy patient
    management IT system and its associated components
  • To input and extract data into Radiotherapy Physics
    computerised record management systems and databases
  • To continually monitor personal and departmental activity to
    ensure the health and safety of the individual, team colleagues
    and Trust patients
  • To communicate dosimetric information to more senior staff
    within the department
  • To communicate and work effectively with other professionals
    i.e. hospital physicists, dosimetrists and therapy radiographers
  • To attend training events and sessions as agreed through the
    Trust's personal review process to ensure professional
    development is continually maintained.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • Gain a Healthcare Science Practitioner (Medical Physics)
    Degree, BSc(Hons) during a 3 year apprenticeship programme,
    via a part-time degree course in the University of the West of
    England, Bristol.
  • Gain experience and competence in the dosimetrist role of the
    department, particularly treatment planning, using specialist, high
    value radiation treatment and associated equipment within a
    hospital environment.
  • To achieve registration with the Register of Clinical
  • Technologists (RCT) upon successful completion of the
    apprenticeship.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

We will support you to gain a B.Sc. (Hons) in Healthcare Science (Medical Physics Technology) at the UWE, Bristol and provide you with practical training locally. This is an opportunity for a motivated individual to enter a field that is short of trained workers, with the aim of ensuring that you are eligible to join the Register of Clinical Technologists at the end of the training period.
