What will the apprentice be doing?
JOB PURPOSE
- To be responsible for any tasks delegated by the Manager or Deputy
- To provide safe, high-quality education and care for pre-school children
- To oversee and direct children’s learning journeys, academically, emotionally and physically in an environment in which the Montessori approach to education is implemented for all the children in pre-school
- To ensure that the philosophy and ethos as laid down in the settings charter is always adhered to
- To fulfil legal and statutory requirements and to ensure that all statutory, legal and set obligations are followed and met in the absence of the Pre-school Manager
- To lead and manage staff and ensure the safety and well-being of the staff in the absence of the Pre-school manager
- To act as a positive role model for the children and staff with regards to friendliness, care, language and courtesy
- To ensure that a daily risk assessment is carried out, for both the classroom and outside areas, before the start of each working day and the arrival of the children
Key Areas of Responsibility
- To both prepare and oversee the preparation of the Montessori environment and curriculum materials in which the furnishings and equipment are complete and correspond to the needs of the children
- To prepare and assist with the planning and implementation of projects, topics, planning of the curriculum and its implementation
- To have responsibility for the care and maintenance of the classroom, including the materials, thus maintaining a clean and orderly environment, and encouraging the children to be brought into this responsibility
- To carry out lessons and to provide learning opportunities using Montessori equipment and other learning materials for individuals or small groups of children
- To ensure records are properly maintained and updated, e.g., daily attendance register, accident and incident book, risk assessments, etc
- To ensure that the preschool is a safe environment for children, staff and others, that equipment is safe, standards of hygiene are high, safety procedures are always implemented, and fire drills regularly practised
- To ensure that the welfare and safety of children is promoted within the setting and that any child protection concerns are always appropriately acted upon immediately
- To be responsible for the safety and physical well-being of children at all times, ensuring children are not left unattended at any time, and to report any serious accidents at once to the Pre-school Manager or the Pre-school Director
- In the absence of the Pre-school Manager, to be the decision maker on sending children home, in the event of illnesses or accidents
- To liaise with parents/carers, informing them about the pre-school and its curriculum, exchanging information about a child’s progress and encouraging parental involvement
- To maintain staff and parent relationships, to ensure the parent’s/carers' trust in leaving children in pre-school care
- To prepare and oversee the end of year reports for your key children moving on to primary school
- To contribute to and to assist in implementing all pre-school policies and procedures, e.g., register and signing out procedures, child protection, health & safety, confidentiality, etc, as listed in the policy folder
- To liaise with the Pre-school Director, Ofsted services and other professionals as necessary and ensure that all legal and statutory requirements are implemented

- You will achieve a level 2 Early Years Practitioner via a work mentor and Cambridge Regional College weekly day release and college assessor
