The 48-month apprenticeship will include college learning and on-the-job experience, working with industry experts across a range of projects. As part of the training, you will select equipment and plan layout, assembly and welding, applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal machining, weld shrinkage and welding techniques.

What will the apprentice be doing?

The broad purpose of the occupation is to manually weld tubes and pipes to high standards of quality and integrity using a minimum of two manual arc welding processes from Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG), Plasma Arc Welding (PAW), Manual Metal Arc (MMA), Metal Inert Gas (MIG)/Metal Active Gas (MAG) and Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW). Supported by your training and your team, your tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • Responsible for completing each weld to the specified standards using appropriate equipment and materials
  • Select equipment and plan layout, assembly and welding, applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal machining, weld shrinkage and welding techniques
  • Lay out, position, align and fit components together
  • Bolt, clamp and tack-weld parts to secure in position for welding
  • Set up equipment and weld parts together using arc, gas-shielded arc, submerged arc or gas welding equipment. May assemble parts by bolting and riveting
  • May repair products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping and reassembling parts using cutting torch, straightening press, and hand tools
  • Use a variety of arc and gas welding equipment
  • Working on a variety of sites including petrochemical refineries

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

  • Apprentices will undertake a Level 3 Pipe Welder apprenticeship by attending The City of Liverpool College on a day release programme. They will attend the Vauxhall Road campus
  • Apprentices without Level 2 maths and English will work towards Level 2 Functional Skills alongside their apprenticeship programme

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

  • Successful completion of this apprenticeship may lead to a full time position with Shepley Engineers
