Wage is set at a Dispensers salary whilst training, at hourly rate of £10.10 per hour, with yearly increases according to performance. Once completed the apprenticeship an hourly rate will be a minimum of £11.45 per hour based on April 2022 rates.

Hours are working on a shift basis/fair rota. Opening hours are as follows: 7am – 10:30pm Monday to Saturday. 9am - 4pm Sundays. 8 hour shifts. Flexibility on evenings and weekends is required. Exact working pattern TBD.

What will the apprentice be doing?
Pharmacy Technicians are professional, skilled and essential members of the pharmacy team. Pharmacy Technicians work in many different work environments, including community pharmacies, GP practices and hospital pharmacy departments. These vacancies are working in a pharmacy attached to Redcar Primary Care hospital.
Pharmacy Technicians prepare, dispense and supply patients and health professionals with over the counter and prescription medications. They also handle inventory and customer transactions at the pharmacy, under the supervision of the Pharmacist. Pharmacy Technicians also make sure that all the equipment in the pharmacy, including scales, computers and printers is running efficiently. They also maintain a sterile environment, ensuring that pill counting trays, countertops and other medication measuring devices meet health and safety standards. Pharmacy Technicians also check and record customer information and perform routine customer service functions.
Your main duties and responsibilities will include but will not be limited to:
- Participate in accordance with standard operating procedures [SOPs] and [under the supervision of the pharmacist in charge/ Responsible Pharmacist) in all dispensing activities, ensuring that the correct medicines are dispensed and that they are appropriate for the patient
- Will include dispensing and labelling medication for individual patient supply and stock items from a variety of prescription types and requisitions and making the necessary records and endorsements
- Follow SOPs to ensure that all issues are dispensed and entered correctly using the pharmacy computer system so that the following are accurate: patient records, records of issues, stock control, the charges made to relevant cost centres and pharmacy workload statistics
- Perform routine self-accuracy checks to ensure safe dispensing
prescriptions from customers, use questioning according to protocols to determine and accurately document allergies, other medications, and exemption status - Dispensed and checked prescriptions to outpatients/customers, providing routine advice on medication use, identifying, and referring them to the pharmacist in charge/ Responsible Pharmacist when appropriate/ further advice is required
- In the sale of Over the Counter (OTC), and miscellaneous items to staff and customers
- Established set criteria to identify patients who require Pharmacist referral when selling OTC
- In housekeeping duties in the dispensary, maintaining clean and tidy dispensing facilities and safe systems of work
- Stock is stored safely, securely according to required storage conditions
- Provide advice to healthcare professionals on storage, expiry dates, stock rotation and other related matters within the guidance of SOPs to ensure a cost-effective service which minimises wastage
- Maintaining good stock rotation
- Identifying and removing of stock not fit for purpose e.g. expired stock
- Ensure all medication incidents are reported in accordance with the policies
- Verbally or in writing as appropriate, with patients, relatives, carers, pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals to provide and receive routine information
- Ensuring all prescriptions are endorsed counted and filed accurately and dispensing items and controlled drugs under the supervision of the Responsible Pharmacist as appropriate
- As an Apprentice Pharmacy Technician, your main responsibility will be to provide pharmacy services accurately, efficiently and safely, under the supervision of the Pharmacist
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
After the 2 years you will receive a certificate as a Pharmacy Technician (integrated) (level 3).
Training:
- You will get one day a week (during your working week) to attend your online training program
- Additional time must be completed to complete assignments and research projects
- You will receive planned observations from your employer/mentor and your Pharmacy Skills Tutor from Woodspeen Training every 8-12 weeks
- An End Point Assessment [EPA] will also take place at the end of the 24 months programme
- The EPA will entail a test, interview, evidence related question and answer and or presentation
- Registration as a Pharmacy Technician for the General Pharmacy Council [GPhc]

- This is a 24-months fixed-term contract (which may lead to a role after successful completion of the 2 year training) for those who are looking for a promising career in community pharmacy, GP Practice or Hospital pharmacy departments. During this training, you will learn to put into practice the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to become a Pharmacy Technician
