What will the apprentice be doing?

This is an opportunity to learn the main workings of the Finance function of a growing SME business in the construction sector. Ideally we would like the successful candidate to progress through all of the AAT levels with us to become a fully qualified AAT Accountant.

The first level of the apprenticeship will take 15 months and your work experience will include the following:

  • An introduction to the purchase ledger, matching invoices to orders and delivery notes, and posting invoices to the ledger
  • Progressing towards complete responsibility for the processing of invoices relating to our new specialist trading division, Mildren Building Services
  • An introduction to the subcontractor ledger including posting of invoices and applications and accounting for VAT
  • Recording of subcontractor retentions and dealing with any related queries
  • Application of the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS), including verification of subcontractors with HMRC
  • Assisting with answering the telephone when required
  • Dealing with queries from suppliers
  • Assisting with the preparation of weekly and monthly payment runs
  • Assisting with the reconciliation of month end supplier statements
  • Processing sales invoices including dealing with retentions, VAT and reverse charge VAT

Accounts/Finance Assistant Apprenticeship Level 2 - AAT

This apprenticeship is a perfect match for someone without any accountancy or bookkeeping knowledge. On this programme they will learn the building blocks of the modern accountant. Not only will they grasp the fundamentals of bookkeeping but we will help them develop those vital skills and behaviours to enable them to put their knowledge into action.

If you’re new to accountancy and finance, looking to change your career into accountancy or have previously worked in an accounts department this level is ideal for you. You don’t need any prior experience working in accounts to study AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting. There are no entry requirements, but you do need good maths, IT and English skills, and a willingness to learn.

You’ll learn a broad range of core accounting skills, including double-entry bookkeeping and basic costing as well as accountancy related business skills and personal skills. You must successfully complete the following:

  • Introduction to Bookkeeping
  • Principles of Bookkeeping Control
  • Principles of Costing
  • Business Environment

You will also be required to complete an End Point Assessment (EPA), which will include a synoptic assessment and interview with supporting portfolio.

Training will be provided by attending either face-to-face classroom based lessons or Live Online. An apprenticeship has to be relevant to the job you are undertaking and you must dedicate 20% of your time towards it.
