What will the apprentice be doing?
Training as a Commis Chef, working towards a level 2 qualification, you’ll be involved in all aspects of the daily kitchen routine.
Initially, you’ll work closely with other chefs to help build your confidence within a new environment and to ensure your safety, as you become confident in your abilities and using your new found skills, you’ll begin to run your own areas within the kitchen.
Duties will include:
- Take part in food safety training in line with current legislation
- Supporting senior chefs
- Prepare ingredients
- Cook fresh ingredients using various different cooking methods and techniques
- Plating and presentation of food
- Portion and stock control
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
Commis Chef level 2 standard.
Working as a commis chef is a great way of getting started in a kitchen, while it’s the most junior culinary role, it provides a means of learning a range of key skills on the job. A commis chef prepares food and carries out basic cooking tasks under the supervision of a more senior chef.
A primary objective of the commis chef is to learn and understand how to carry out the basic functions in every section of the kitchen. This gives them the opportunity to experience, consider and value each
section with a view to choosing an area where they feel most inspired.
As an apprentice commis chef, you will learn in different ways, from online learning, practical learning on site with your peers, as well as having a one to one tutor who will support you through your apprenticeship.
Each month, you will learn something new and after 12 months, you'll be a fully qualified and experienced commis chef!
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
Full-time chef position at The Black Horse.
